PS3 VPNs/proxies and the BBC iPlayer

    Hey,

A friend of a friend of a friend accesses the iPlayer on his Wii using services provided by the website Witopia.net. He's quite tech savvy and probably had no problem setting this all up. But I'm only OK at tech stuff and don't really know the guy so I contacted Witopia.net and they said that a PS3 can't handle a VPN account and so you need their hardware product called a Cloakbox to allow you access to the world's streaming sites without actually being in their respective country, i.e. the iPlayer, HULU etc.

However this Cloakbox is currently only available within the US and also the item and the subscription to make it work are quite pricey and then if the company closes, all I'm left with is a shiny black box that won't let me watch the iPlayer on my PS3.

Does anyone know of a relatively simple way to make the iPlayer work on a PS3 that uses a wireless connection? I don't mind paying if it works and is reliable. The Cloakbox from Witopia is $199 with one year free subscription and then $99 per year afterwards.

    Thanks

Well looking at there cloakbox as they call it its just a wireless router with the vpn details in it. Just get a router that will allow you do this and off you go. They are also a bit pricey try www.overplay.net much cheaper and more choice of vpn's.

Ugh, that all looks a bit over the top just for the minor convenience of having the iPlayer on the PS3 and expensive too once you factor in the cost of a router that can do all this (wherever I would get one) plus the monthly subscription and the drain on your download limit. I thought there might have been an easier/cheaper way.

Thanks for your suggestions, but I guess I'll probably just forget about it.

What is stopping this person just entering a proxy server in the UK on their ps3, or am I missing something?

You could always try configuring an Amazon web server as your own proxy, just don't go over the bandwidth. There are free instances for 12 months at the moment.

As far as I know this won't actually work for a PS3 so as to allow viewing the iPlayer. As far as I know the minimum is a router that will route your net access through a VPN. However if it has worked for you, I'll try it. Where did you get your proxy? If you don't mind me asking.
