The gays and the musicals

So I've always wondered, being fairly fanatic about them myself, whether there is as much of the stereotypical link as I think there is, or if we're a loud minority. I ask mainly because the huge majority of straight guys I've ever encountered loathe the very premise. For simplicity, it's listed as Men who have Sex with Men (MSM), the female equivalent, and (sure why not) anyone considering themselves straight, be it trans or otherwise.

In general, do you like musicals? 79 votes

I wouldn't really be a big fan, but voted yes, because there are a few I like.

    Repo The Genetic Opera :pac:
*looove* Anthony Stewart Head in that! :D

The question options don't reveal much. I'm a gay male, and I like musicals. By "like" I mean I enjoy them every now and again; I'm not fanatical about them.

I'm obsessive about musicals :o It's embarassing how many soundtracks I have on my iPod and how often I listen to them.

Generally no, but there are exceptions. I love Sweeney Todd, and would quite like to see Les Mis and Avenue Q.

But the likes of Mamma Mia can fúck off. :pac:

    They are both excellent :D
And agreed! Should never have been done.

Surely straight men and straight women should be split if you're to give an accurate control?

I like anything of the arts in general so long as its good, so that includes musicals depending on what musical it is and what the cast are like. I don't believe I've been able to stomach anything from the recent hollywood driven rebirth though, well, does "We Will Rock You" count? Probably not, no, definitely not... but its awesome, and definitely a musical which kind of blurs the lines on stereotypes, it will be interesting to see who goes to it when its made into a film.

Love Repo! Such a good movie.

I like musicals but I wouldn't watch a film solely 'cause it's one. I voted yes but I'm bi so dunno how effect the results really. =P

My original poll had about 12 different options, but I thought with the small sample size we wouldn't get much out of it, so I just cut it down as much as I could. :)

I've never even heard of Repo  so it's on my list now. Les Mis = the best.

I like Rocky Horror and Grease (and Grease 2 :o) but apart from that and a handful of others, I can't say I'm fanatical about musicals. I enjoy the odd one thats all.

    I despise musicals.

It really depends on the musical? I like one with a good story Fiddler for example would stand up as a good play if the music was taken out of it.

You forgot MSFM and FSFM :P

I do like them but I also like operette and some operas.

that would be a no from me.

I'm really not a huge fan at all - there are a few I have enjoyed (Rocky Horror, Mamma Mia, Wicked) but in general they just wouldn't be my thing.

I've seen one or two and loved them. I'm not obsessive, but would certainly like to see Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis... to name a few.

That's just it, I like the story of Fiddler, and I like the music of it, but I find it so jarring when characters I'm meant to be suspending reality for suddenly burst into song, I've cringed every time I've seen a musical..

I'm watching Grease now. I understand why people hate musicals. This is dire!

Finally someone else who hates Grease. Most people I know don't understand how I can loathe it so much.

I saw the Wizard of Oz for the first time ever last night (not the whole thing, just bits of it.) I was struck by how awful it is! I always thought I was a deprived child because I'd never seen it but now I'm now glad my parents never made me endure it.

I reckon I'd have similar feelings to the Sound of Music if I ever saw it (which I don't plan on doing. Ever.)

Gah! Two of my favourite musicals! That said I only tend to watch the Wizard of Oz at Christmas so it could just be a nostalgic thing.

I have no allusions about The sound of Music. I know I only love that 'cause it has a lot childhood memories tied to it. :p

there are a few i like but it's like films, they're hit or miss.i liked joseph but
I saw les misérables in the west end a couple of years ago and my got it was horrificly boring, i was almost crying with the boredom.

I like stuff like Repo! The Genetic Opera, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog, Cannibal! The Musical, etc. But I don't think they really count. They're more.. spoofy musicals than 'standard' musicals.

Though I do like Grease. And The Sound of Music. And Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.. hmm.. :o

And why's there no option for pan/bi!

    See earlier post :)

Interesting how people seem to like particular musicals, but point out that they don't think much of the art form in general. I think now it was a slightly flawed question to put (or more accurately a flawed question to poll). I guess it's like books. There are a percentage of people who say (and I'm quoting one) "Ugh I hate books. You've got to put so much effort in, whats the point?". Others will read anything (my dearest mother). Most will read the odd thing, certain genres etc. I think it's the same deal here. Most people will enjoy a musical, if it's the right show.

My intent originally was because (using the book parallel again) a lot of straight guys would say "Ugh I hate musicals. All singing and dancing, whats the point?", and it's stereotypically a gay thing. Interestingly on a forum who are less afraid of gender boundaries, and aware of false steretyping, there was a broad spectrum of views. Because of the understandable lack of straighties hanging around here, I've nothing to compare it against, so you can't surmise much from the poll. It was nice to hear everyones thoughts though :D

    Anyway, thanks for playing ;)

I am a complete sucker for musicals!!!! Even the ones that are generally considered crap have a certain appeal to me!! I guess it is because of the music: even if the storyline is boring, at least I have the songs to entertain myself. So for me the music is a key factor on choosing to see amusical.

Saw The Adventures of Priscilla a few years ago, one of the best theatre plays I've seen in my entire life!!!

2025 gigs: Selofan, Alison Moyet, Borderline Festival, Wardruna, Gavin Friday, Orla Gartland, The Courettes, Nine Inch Nails

    not one for musicals.

I think they strive to be stupid, shiny, insincere and over produced and they pander to an over developed cynicism for performance and an underdeveloped musical taste.

Glee got it right, glee captures the Zeitgeist of musicals for me and it's exactly the kind of thing I've no interest in.

It's nice to read the poll results show "MSM no" out hitting "MSM yes" by 3:2.

Same here, can't stand it, I don't like musicals at all. Don't get me started on Mamma mia (new or old)
