Tips for 'going out' makeup?

    Hi all,
I'm having trouble finding make-up to wear on nights out when I really want my skin to have a shine to it, if you know what I mean. I see so many girls on a night out and their make-up just looks really luminous and different from normal day-to-day make up but I just can't seem to achieve this effect. I use a different foundation for going out which I'm happy with, and then I use a pressed powder, bronzer, blusher and a highlighter but I still feel like my face looks dull, just the same way it does during the day. Does anyone know of any product I could use that would give me a bit more of a shine or a lift for the night-time? I don't know too much about make-up to be honest, a lot of the time I get confused by all the different products so it would be great if anyone had a specific product that they use for nights out.

    Thanks a mil!

Benefit - High Beam or MAC - Strobe cream are great highlighters.

What type of power are you using? That may be making your look 'flat'. Go for a translucent powder rather than one with pigment in it. I find the loose translucent powder best - any brand with do.

Also, what's your blusher like? If you go for one that has a sheen in it you'll get more of a 'glow' when out at night.

Yeah I use High Beam alright I do find that helps but it doesn't do enough for me! As for powders, I usually just pick up any cheap pressed powder in Boots, the translucent powder is a good idea I will definitely try that.

I use a Benefit blusher but honestly I find it a little dull - it doesn't do much for me. Do you have any advice on what brands do nice blushers with a sheen?

Thanks so much for the advice, as you can probably tell I'm pretty clueless about most of this stuff!

Cheap pressed powder is your enemy. They'll always look flat. A loose powder, and a better quality one should certainly help. I haven't found a cheap powder that's any good tho, so any recommendations would be good!

If you're flying anywhere, have a look at MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in the airport - it's really great, definitely allows your skin (and highlighter) to shine through glowily :)

It could be all in your application.Do you have a good set of brushes?

Mac Strobe cream is a great highlighter for under your foundation. As the other post say - switch to a translucent powder. You could also apply a highlighter on the cheek bones (sweeping up towards your temple) I use Bobbie Brown's shimmer brick (LOVE IT!) it really gives a nice dewy look.

Some sort of bronzer? Also, try ELF's lilac petal, its a good dupe for Benefit high beam, and it could be good just to test it out first and see if its works for you rather than forking out loads at first.

Yep, the MAC Skinfinishes are amazing. They bring out the blushers with colour during the summer and they fly off the shelves!

If you want to go for a more dewy look you could use a cream blusher, although I know a lot of girls don't like using them/find it too hard to apply. MACs Ladyblush or Lilicent give nice glows. Maybelline do a nice cheaper version with their mousse cream blush.

If you prefer a powder MACs Peachykeen or Springsheen both have a shimmer going through them. (note: I used to work for MAC hence the MAC overload!)

Something like No.7's translucent loose powder is grand.

I often find that bronzer can dull the skin, so i tend to stick to shimmery blushers and highlighters. The only bronzer i've found that suit my skin is the Bourgois Delice de Poudre(the chocolate smelling one!!) It has little flecks of gold shimmer in it that gives a radiant look rather than shiny. On a night out i tend to use Dior's Shimmer powder in Rose Diamond, again, it suits my fair skin and gives a glow. Its a little too sparkly for day wear though!

No.7's illuminator is great-I always get loads of compliments when I wear it saying I look really 'healthy' or 'glowing' Magic :D

I love Maybellines cream blushes for a dewy bit of colour aswell, although afaik they have changed the colours in them recently? I havent been able to find my usual one for the last month or two-gutted cuz I swore by the babydoll pink! Now they seem to just to three much more prominent colours that dont suit me at all :( Worth a try though, because depending on your skin tone you could find one of them suits you-just not me unfortunately. Hate when makeup staples are discontinued!

If you wear a foundation with SPF, I've been told that can make you look a bit washed out and less made up when it comes to photos on nights out etc. So perhaps try a foundation without SPF for night time.

Thank you so so much for all the great suggestions guys, I will definitely be trying these! I think I'll splash out on a better powder and I'm really excited to try some of the highlighters and blushers ye suggested! Thanks again! :)

I forgot to say, someone mentioned the Mac Mineralize Skinfinish being available at the airport..is this the only way to get it or is it available in the shops here? Had a look on the website it looks like exactly what I need!

I know exactly what you mean I had the same prob and pressed powder and powder blush don't cut it!! I found a highlighter that is amazing over foundation (you need to use a good foundation brush) its the gold compact face illuminator from the Tess Daly in Marks and Spencer. Her tub of body shimmer is great too as I put it on over tan especially around my shoulder and collarbones I've received loads of compliments on both my foundation and body shimmer. I've bought her stuff for the past two christmases not sure if its in stock all year round.

Love the sound of these, gonna get some this week to try.

I used to love Armani fluid sheer for a nice glow but then they discontinued my shade :(

I now use either smashbox artificial light luminizing lotion in a goldy colour, can't remember the name.

Or I sometimes use a white shimmery powder I have just down my nose and dab on my cheeks, It's in a tiny little white ball container and I have no idea what brand it is so i'll prob never find it again :(
