Global Changes in the Coffee Market

Significant changes in the coffee market have been taking place of late. Prices have risen sharply for those operating on the wholesale / retail side of the counter. I imagine that most with commercial interests in Ireland, like ourselves, are looking at ways of managing these cost increases in an economy diametrically opposed to price hikes.

There are several ways to skin this cat (which as an industry I suspect we must resolve individually).

I found the following comic-strip slide show - from North Carolina's Counter Culture Coffee - a great means of explaining the sometimes complex world of commodities.

I present this purely for information purposes.

Nice piece. What sort of a % increase has there been for beans wholesale over the last 0-24 months?

I'm still reeling from paying €7 for a small cup of 'coffee' a few years ago, never mind being asked to pay €20 for the experience.

Nuts I say. I have noticed coffee prices going up and I have switched to an Aldi brand, and you know what, it's just as good.

I was paying €7 in Tesco for a brand coffee now just €3 and I must be coffee taste dead because it's lovely coffee.

And as we know there was an add for a premium coffee running that said there is no difference in the beans anyway ~ "at **** we use the same beans in our ground as we do in our premium"

    Snuff said.

Anecdotally the NYSE "C Price" has increased by over 100%.

That said, the rises in the speciality coffee market would be considerable but disparate. I'm sure someone out there (whom is better versed) has precise data, but I think it would be fair to say that there's at least a 25% increase over 12 mos.

There are consequences across the board and the options / solutions are many. As I said, I think these rises are something that the consumer should be aware of

Totally subjective and not surprising at all... this opinion, I fear, is the overwhelming general consensus. And one I can certainly understand & respect given the state of Ireland's economics.

I would disagree on most of what you've said. But as I'm the guy trying to flog the stuff I suspect my opinion doesn't carry much weight!

I feel you're probably right on both counts, firstly cheaper coffee tends to reflect this in flavour and your opinion will probably be met with a tinge of contempt as you're the seller. However, there may be a happy medium for consumers, not necessarily sellers though. I haven't researched it but are there ways of getting cheaper quality coffee online?

Apologies to the sellers but thats just the way things are right now. Everyone is shopping around.
