Fiesta 1.25L. Great little cars, reliable too.

It's not the petrolhead answer, but get a supermini in 1.4 or less.

Make sure you get all your insurance quotes before you buy the car.

the €4k includes the cost of car + insurance?

i got a Peugeot 206 1.1 for my first car .... great for keeping insurance and petrol costs down the tax is about €275 for a '00 - '06 model i think.

you could pick up a '00/'01 golf for around €3,000

it also depends on whether your buying from a dealer or privately. Please SHOP AROUND for insurance, you wont believe the differences out there!!!! makes a big difference whether your going fully comprehensive (which i would recommend) with the insurance.
