Is Finish Line Wet Lube Enough to Stop Rust?

Im only asking because I noticed in our shed at home we have a few 20 year old cheap mountain bikes that have never been kept in the house and the only lubrication they've ever had is a big shot of black grease from my fathers mechanics-style grease gun, probably going years at a time in between shots of grease, and they've been passed down and ridden hard in all weather for years but their chains and chainrings seem rust free and protected, whereas the hybrid I just got rid of when I upgraded recently had rust on the chain and chainrings and derailleur even though I regularly sprayed it with GT85, lubed it with Finish Line and kept it in the house, it was only 2 years old aswell, a Carerra Subway 1 so not really a cheap piece of crap either.

I dont want to make the same mistake with my new Boardman and Im going to be using it a lot more than I did the Carerra so I want to start looking after it properly from day 1, the chain and chainrings came with no lube at all on them from Halfords and they are very shiny and delicate looking, I have them coated in Finish Line and the rest sprayed with GT85 but Im not 100% sure about either stuff now to be honest, any other recommendations?

Modern chainrings are generally alloy so don't rust. The cassette is steel but plated and shouldn't rust either. This goes for any good quality part, from entry level on Shimano components AFAIK. The chain is the only bit that needs lubing and Finish Line wet is good stuff, yes, probably the best option for Irish weather.

A new chain will come pre-lubed from the factory it was made in & it's very high quality lube that they use.

Finish line is fine for the chain. Maybe use the dry lube during the dry weather as it picks up less grit/dirt.
What's GT40? If it's anything like WD40 don't put it anywhere near your bike.

    Oh I meant GT85, sorry.

Funny, I've had two 105 cassettes show some signs of rust. I did, however, leave them alone after wet rides for a couple of days without spraying the winter grime off.

I've had that as well, if I've left them, point is though you don't have to specifically lube a cassette after cleaning it. You do with a chain or you will have rust in the morning.

Oh had that as well. Re. cassettes, I'm the kinda guy who will usually clean his bike after every wet ride to get the grime off. Anal?
