    Hi,

Was wondering roughly how much it costs to get a complete new brake system on an oldish racer. I mean new everything, pads, cables, the brakes themselves etc.
    Cheers

I have a set of campy breaks I will shortly be putting up for sale with other bibs and bobs, the pads are roughly 6 months old, could sell them and 2 cables for €25. They are not that difficult to fit, first thing I did when I got my new bike was upgrade the breaks. Took me 10 minutes to fit new ones

If you buy new calipers the pads will come included. I would estimate around €40-50 for the brakes and €10 for the cables, if you do it yourself. You may need long reach if it is an old bike but that might only be if you want to run 700c wheels. not sure on that one.

Yep, I got a new set of Tektro (47-57mm drop) brakes from Wiggle.co.uk for around €45. I'm very happy with them. Then you have to factor in brake cables and cable housing and levers. Really, I'd say €60 to replace both brakes fully is realistic if you buy first hand.

If you need very deep drop brakes (57-65mm), I have a pair I'm willing to part with.

Brakes are relatively easy to fit yourself. Tools you'll need are allen keys, a wire cutter/pliers and grease.

The prices above are about right, dual pivot calipers are what you want if you're looking for slightly better braking power, whats your reason for wanting to replace them in the first place?
If you need any help or advice drop by my shop or mail me.

I bought my bike (a puch clubman) second hand off a guy in town and since the day i got it the brakes have been really bad so i just wanna replace the whole lot. I was initially planning on bringing it to a shop but I might have a go at doing it myself now. Thanks for the advice.

was the bike sold to you as fully working/serviced?

theres a set of Miche brake calipers for 22euro from Wiggle. they get good reviews

Yeah it was sold as fully working. Which it pretty much is, its a good bike apart from the brakes.
Thanks i might give wiggle a look.

Oh and just one more thought, it probably has steel rims on it, if this is the case, the brakes will never be great, no matter what you do!!
