Right, just looking for some info on free to air satellite systems

I want to get a free to air system installed for my parents down the country.
I've been quoted €199 for the dish and box, inc. labour and cable.

    1. Now, what should I be paying for a second box for another room?
    2. And, how much would a Free-to-air recordable box cost? (similar to Sky+)
    3. Also, is that Free-to-air recordable box easy to use as my parents are not very technical.

    Cheers.

(I searched the forum and didn't find the info)

If your looking for easy to use recorders you might be as well go for a 'Freesat' recorder these are receivers that are certified for receiving the U.K's Freesat system (see: www.freesat.co.uk). It has 7 day program guide and features such as series link etc.

I'm presuming that the system that you were quoted for is Standard Definition?

    I would assume so.
I'm not very knowledgable on satellite systems tbh.
We don't have any new tvs at home so no real point in getting HD?

No not much point unless your planning on buying any new televisions in the next few years?

Make sure to get a Freesat box with MPEG4 decoder so you can decode Saorview as well receive FTA satellite channels. This will make you future proof when the digital switchover happens

I use Edision argus mini receiver with allows me to have DTT and sat channels on the same EPG.

This unit also records and pauses etc storing the programmes onto a USB key.

    They cost about €150.

Specs on the this website "http://www.tvtrade.ie/edision-argus-mini-2in1-combo-receiver.html"

Edision argus mini receiver is not a Freesat recievier.its a combo box ,it can receive the channels but has to be manually tuned if a channel is moved. (a Freesat box does this automatically )

    NO SUCH THING EXISTS!

a FREESAT box will only receive satellite channels,
SAORVIEW is via an Aerial pointed at an Irish Teressetrial transmitter,

at present no receiver can do both,

the Edison can receive free to air channels & irish digital, but you are in deep sh*te if channels change frequency or if you want a proper EPG,
Lack of MHEG5 on the SAORVIEW side will result in lack of digital text, updates, etc,
you can record 'now or next' on the edison but compared to a 'FREESATS' 7 DAY EPG you can plan your viewing a lot better, & know that the channel is actually going to be there,

    ADVICE,
    buy a 'SAORVIEW' approved TV

    & 'FREESAT' receiver

    future proof!!

Mr.Snegg, you seem to know a fair bit about this topic, what free to air system would incorporate the most channels,I gather you are saying that a separate antenna would be required to pick up the irish channels.I currently have sky but it is getting a little expensive so i am exploring options.

A standard sky dish with an aerial connected to a Saorview transmitter will give you a lot of free TV, covering all the Irish terrestrial channels and the UK terrestrial channels. For convenience use a combo satellite and terrestrial box but really a Saorview compatible TV and a Freesat HD box will give you a lot for a relatively small amount of money.
