Warners to Animate The Dark Knight Returns

    Freakin AWESOME........

    http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/04/14/movie-version-of-frank-millers-the-dark-knight-returns-in-the-works/
........ Bleeding Cool have heard from multiple sources (enough with the multiples already) that work is underway on a movie adaptation of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson‘s classic The Dark Knight Returns. As you might have guessed, however, this is to be an animated adaptation, much like the recent All Star Superman or in-the-works Year One.

Fittingly, Year One will come along first, but DKR is already in the early stages of development. According to our sources, several veterans of Batman toons past will be on the crew list, though we’re still trying to confirm who is writing and directing the film.

It would be sheer guesswork to try and determine when this might make it to the screen, but it isn’t going to be anytime soon. Here’s hoping they do it right.

Which doesn’t necessarily mean with a dry, determined insistence on copying Miller’s pages…

Is it too late to suggest Adam West in the role?

*Some people have been over him for years, to be fair.

I like that it's just dropped in that they're already working on Year One. The Warner comic adaptations can be a bit hit-and-miss but fingers crossed.......

It's the correct route to go down (animated films), I mean there are a wealth of classic graphic novels within the Batman mythos that would be perfect for a direct animated adaptation.

Loved the story itself, can't wait for this now :(

Well what they seem to do is have two strands of animated movies: One strand using original stories, not exactly tied to the animated universe of the 90's/00's but using the voice cast (Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill etc) and another strand adapting classic stories (Like Year one, Under The Hood, All star Superman etc) and using different art style and "bigger" names doing the voices aimed at an older audience (Still PGish but with harder violence (deaths etc) and light swearing). So it will be interesting to see how they do Year One and TDKR

I heard Mark Hamill is packing in with the Joker after Arkum Asylum.

That's a shame. UTRH was great but something felt kinda wrong about the absence of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill....

What's the point of this? It looks like a carbon copy of the comic book.

Why not just - you know - read it?

Is it really important? Why adapt Lord of The Rings or Spider-Man or any of them?

Novels are totally different. Lord of The Rings was brought to life when it was put on the big screen.

The Spider-Man films merely emulated certain aspects from the comics. They did not use the comics as a storyboard.

This is my main problem with this adaption. It seems to make no effort to be any different than the original comic book. It's just taking the panels and making them move.
" I wanted to show off just what the possibilities of the comic book medium were, and films are completely different. If we only see comics in relation to movies then the best that they will ever be is films that do not move" - Alan Moore

Though it's pointless of me to complain. Adaptions such as this is just proof that comic books are a dying art form and will, eventually, be totally obsolete.

I understand that, to most of you, I'm just a whiny prick. A butthurt comic book fan. Still though, I hope someone gives what I'm saying a thought.

After the terrible Year One adaptation, I think I'll be giving this a pass.

Thank you, Year One was awful!

It's not though, wouldn't that just be the sh*t motion comics you find on Netflix?

These films are pretty much like remakes, just because they exist doesn't detract from the original material, if anything they will expose the material to a larger audience and encourage people to maybe pick up the comics.

I think DC have done a good job with them from the ones I have seen, and I like that each movie copies the art style of the original artist. I just wish Marvel would cop on, they have some nice stories waiting to be adapted.

Edit: Also, how can the DVD cover not be the image of Batman jumping in front of the lightning bolt?

It was done in the Adventures of Batman & Robin with Michael Ironside as Batman

Awesome. Actually I think that's one of the bonus episodes on the Gotham Knight BluRay.

Can anyone list the feature-length animated Batman movies, from best to worst? Have a voucher for HMV at the moment and strongly tempted to spend it on this.

I know there's more than just this five, though...

I'm not arsed doing a list for you but Mystery of the Batwoman is defo the worst. The rest on that are great.

Don't you think the edited version is even more disturbing, though? You get to hear Joker's dying sounds as he is electrocuted. You don't get that in the uncut version.

Mask of the Phantasm is all kinds of amazing

Am I the only one that thinks the villain from this is the spitting image of Krang and his body suit from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

I re-watched Gotham Knight last night. It's okay, but since the six different segments are by six different directors in six different styles the quality is not consistent.

Don't forget Sub Zero too. Animation is not as good as Mask of the Phantasm, but its still a great animated Batman film. Much better than Gotham Knight, Mystery of the Batwoman & Year one (which I thought was muck).

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (the uncut version) is definitely my favourite animated Batman film, its amazing.
