Hi all have put a door closer on in a building and the door is very difficult to open, changed this for a less stronger model but same problem. Followed template instructions for fixing

Changed from Henderson 600 to 400 the door closes fine it's just difficult to open

There are elderly people in the building who struggle to push the door open.

    Any advice appreciated

I've no knowledge of Henderson but does the leaflet mention a back-check valve which may need adjustment, it might do the job (not sure though)? You might see it as a small screw somewhere between the arm and the door jam.

    [Edit]
looks like the back-check is not adjustable on the 400 or 600 series, only on the higher models

No back check on this one, what effect does screwing the arm in or out have is there some way of altering the opening force required?

Door is 900 wide and opens easily when you take the closer off

Maybe I should try a different type any recommendations?

I know this is already an old thread. But I think it may be very helpful for elderly people who have problem opening a hard door closer. Because I have recently had the same problem but I successfully fix it. My door closer is very hard to open but unfortunately does not have any back check valve or spring power adjustment option on it. And all online articles suggest me to adjust this valve, but there is no solution for anybody with a fixed non-adjustable spring door closer (like mine)

I find one interesting article which tells me when I move/relocate some parts of my door closer, the power needed to open the door will decrease. I try and it works. Source: http://www.uniquestuff.net/how-to-adjust-door-closer-spring-power-without-adjustment-screw.html
