An Italian peace activist has become the second non-Palestinian to be murdered in just over a week in the occupied territories.

Vittorio Arrigoni was murdered by the Tawheed and Jihad group, one of several extremist Islamic groups that operate in the Gaza Strip in opposition to the Hamas government. The group abducted Arrigoni in an attempt to force Hamas to release its leader, who was arrested last month.

    Full story here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/apr/15/italian-peace-activist-murdered-gaza

This is an absolute disgrace. Here is a guy, for all intents and purposes was in Gaza to help the Palestinian people. He was involved in promoting rights for Palestinian fishermen to operate without hindrance from Israel.

It's these extremist Islamic eejits that pose a huge problem in Gaza. Targeting people who went out of their way to assist the Palestinian people is completely and utterly vile.

Hamas arrested the leader of their group a while back - so it's understood that these attacks are in response to his arrest.

This is terrible, reminds me of the Margaret Hassan tragedy a few years ago. I am bowing out before the inevitable point scoring

The murder is just horrible. There is truly something very wrong, with some people. Hopefully, the group behind this will be cracked down on. There clearly nuts, if they are attacking people who are trying to help.

The PLO were not extreme enough so we got Hamas. Now Hamas are not extreme enough so we get this other crowd.

Mind you, we're no ones to be talking with our friends in the North.

What is there to discuss here?

    No loss to humanity.

The ISM are a bunch of extremists with a large contingent of Irish in their ranks.

They're as extreme in their language as Hamas. I was told by someone who linked me to this story that this Italian chap referred to Jews in a derogatory manner and his friend is on youtube saying that Israel killed him and that Israel is a cancer. So you'll forgive me if I don't shed any tears for this creep.

The ISM foreign contingent are usually white, middle class European/American conflict tourists who go to Gaza/West Bank for some stone throwing sessions against the IDF in the media spotlight. There is nothing 'humanitarian' about them. There is nothing peaceful about them. None of these people would go to Darfur or to Somalia for real humanitarian work.

They see the pictures in the news. They romanticise the brave 'freedom fighters' who only have stones to defend themselves, and start to believe they're part of a war they know nothing about.

As I said, many of them are Irish who have projected their own 'struggle' onto the Israeli/Pal conflict.

If these naive idiots knew anything, they'd know there are many groups in Gaza with many different agendas. You cannot unite them all under your hatred of Israel, because some of them hate you purely for being white, western and non-Muslim.

This idiot may have spent every waking minute demonising Israel through youtube/twitter and every other method - but as he was taking his last breaths, hanging by the neck in some backstreet ****hole in Gaza, you can bet that his last prayer was to see the IDF storm in and save him.

You sleep with dogs, you get fleas.

Now let's hope the rest of the trouble making ISM cretins head home and leave the conflict to those involved.gl

That's a particularly unpleasant celebration of violence there, between the initial callous remark and the rather vivid imagery at the end. I think we'll dispense in perpetuity with Trench Broom, who in any case only posts on Israel threads - he can head home and leave discussions to those who are rather less troll-shaped.

    moderately,
