Contract Role & JSA. Urgent Advice Needed...

My husband & I are long-term unemployed. We receive RA as well as the Fuel Allowance.

I've applied for and am likely to be offered a contract role for 4 months paying E15-17ph. I've just spoken to Citizen's Advice who say based on the E15 figure, the JSA would be E20 a week.

From these figures, it would seem it's not worth taking this role, as effectively we lose money and would really struggle to pay the bills. I am so disappointed as we really want to work, but with only one wage coming in it would be impossible to survive...:(

I really don't know what to do for the best.

    Any advice would be welcome.

    TIA:)

    Hi
me and hubbie have been in a similar situation. - although in my case it was 8 weeks at a little less per hour than yourself and we have 1 son 2 years old.

What we found was that fuel supp was transferred to hubbie - as ironically he had now been signing long enough to get it (we lost 2 weeks payment in the changover). We did loose our RA (E100 / wk), but we were as a household still better off by E90/week by me working. Bear in mind I could claim my husbands tax credits which meant I paid no tax and as a medical card holder I paid the lower rate of USC.

I suppose it depends where you live and what your rent is. I was also lucky that within 2 weeks of finishing work my comunity welfare officer had reinstated our RA and was giving us supp welfare allowance whilst waiting for our JSA means test to be done ( still waiting for this after 5 weeks).

I think what was hard for hubbie was that effectively his dole was non existant and I was paying everything. I enjoyed being back at work / getting a break from our son. Something which I am struggling to get used to again!

Oh thank you very much for the swift reply! I didn't realise that the tax credits would be transferred to me. Nor did I know less USC is paid as we both hold Medical Cards. That eases the worry somewhat...

I would love to take this job. It's a very good role which would look great on my CV. But I guess you have to balance this with the realities! My husband might well have the Fuel Allowance transferred to him as he's certainly been unemployed long enough!!

I guess we'll see. Thanks once again!!:)

The fuel allowance payment ends in april and will restart in september so 4 months work might not end your qualification for same.

    Hi just to clarify,
you will need to get hubbie to apply for fuel allowance at social welfare and get onto revenue to make sure that all relevant tax credits are moved over to you.
