    Hi all,

Just looking for a bit of advice here as I have been tasked by a small club I am involved in to look into creating a web site that can be used to inform members and general public about events we are holding and results from these events along with a few pictures and information about the club and how to contact us in relation to becoming a member etc. Nothing too fancy.
I was wondering if a WordPress site would be a good option for this. We want to have our own domain (either .ie or .com) for the club.
Has anyone here done anything similar or what would you suggest?
    Thanks.

Do you have any experience with setting up sites at all?

If not, not to worry. There are two (hopefully) very straight forward things you should do.
    1. Obtain a domain - can do this with Register365 (or anywhere you like really). Don't have exact prices but a .ie is about €40 a year and .com is abuot €10 a year (rounding up).

You'll need to repoint this site to the Wordpress site you set up. Anyone reading this please correct me if wrong but you may need to have this address hosted somewhere. I have some small websites myself and would gladly add a redirect of your domain to your Wordpress site for you under my hosting for free.. (they give me too much anyway). If you needed that option PM me.

    2. Set up the WordPress free site, choose a nice team template for yourself (google will help with that). Speaking from my own limited experience of WordPress it'll take a short while to get used to the ins and outs of it but pretty straight forward once you're all set up...

Hope that's been a small help anyway........ :):)

Do yourself a favour an sign up to squarespace, $12 a month includes hosting and domain...

$12 a month is a bit pricey when you can get a year's Irish hosting for €50 and a .com domain for €7ish. Some might have a blog-only offering for less.

    Hi,
Thanks to everyone for their input.
Shawty, your advice was very helpful.
I have some experience of web site design and maintenance and limited WordPress experience. I was really just wondering if WordPress would be a suitable environment to create the club website in. From reading a bit about it I would think that it would work quiet well.

One question though...if I set up a redirect from my domain to the free Wordpress site I create for the club, will it appear in the address bar as being from my domain or will the clubname.wordpress.com address come up?

The free version of WordPress doesn't allow this. It also displays ads and other features are limited. You have to buy the Premium version to prevent this.
    Free
    http://en.wordpress.com/features/
    Premium
    http://en.wordpress.com/products/

I'd advise you to spend the €70ish a year on hosting with all the features available including the better domain name.

well working in the industry for the last 4 years I do know what i am talking about. its worth it to spend about €120 a year, have less hassle and a nicer site than you'll get with a wordpress install and hosting.

who's gonna build that wordpress site, make sure it's always updated and fix stuff when it doesnt work?

Thing is that the $120 price point is limited to 10 pages which isn't that much, along with other limitations. $240 might be a more realistic price. Having your own hosting with WordPress has much more options available and it's an easy enough install. The learning curve is easier with squarespace, but WP is easy enough to buiild and maintain and many manage just fine using a hosting solution.

Given that the OP is talking about a small club and about free WP hosting suggests that cost is important.

I haven't done this before but I think it's possible to retain your original URL by using a mod_rewrite.

If all included on your end are happy with cheap and cheerful and the odd Ad appearing just go for the basic free WP site. I really don't see a necessity to go off throwing money at this day one.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/ - "Registering a domain through WordPress.com and mapping that domain to your blog costs $17.00 per domain, per blog, per year."

Start with that, see how you go. If the site is a success with your club and they want something more substantial down the line then by all means put some money into it.

If the site is just something to give your club a small bit of web presence I'm sure it will be simple enough and you can tackle any initial issues/errors yourself (via Google :) )

fair enough about the page limit, having a good site on the web isnt free and people dont appreciate that. if the op wants a basic template site fair enough but hosting isnt free either.

also 10 pages should be more than enough.

and by 'build' i presume you mean install a template?

    Letfly,

For what you want to do Wordpress is perfect. The question you have to ask is do you want to spend any money on your site.

If not just set up a free wordpress site, it will work but has limitations.

What I suggest you do is buy a domain / web address you want which for a .com costs 5.99

Then you can re direct that which costs nothing to your free wordpress site but will have the sae limitations.

What I suggest you do is to buy some hosting for the year which will cost €49 per year from a company like blacknight.

Once you have that all set up which is very easy you just install wordpress on your webspace. You can do a manual install if you know what your at or a simple couple of clicks "app vault install"

Form there your up and running plus you will also have email on your domain etc.

Ive done loads of blogs adn sites so if you want s few pointers just ask or if your realy struggling let me know and I will set you up no worries.

    Hi Adrian,

Thanks for that info. I have done a few basic websites using Frontpage in the past so I am not a complete beginner. I think we will take your advice and go down the domain/hosting route so that things look more professional. I will have a look at Blackknight and similar hosting companies.
    Thanks for your input.
