Its certainly a provocative subject and one that I'm really unsure about.

Haven followed Spurs for many years I very much remember the 'hissing' and 'spurs are on their way to Auschwitz' song when visiting grounds such as Old Trafford, Highbury, Stamford Bridge and Upton Park. With Arsenal and West Ham it was particularly ironic in that they both have a large jewish following. (The only two jewish people I personally know both follow Arsenal) and it must have been very uncomfortable for them.

Back in the Seventies our own fans started to use the term 'Yid and Yiddos' as a way of turning it back on the opposing fans. Usuing the term as a badge of honour, whether you were jewish or not. Even though we do have a large jewish fan base, the majority of fans that attend games are still non-jews but are still proud to unite and defend against small minded moronic opposing fans who do not see their own history.

Arsenal - have the largest ethnic multi-cultural fan base in London and has had numerous prominent Jewish influence at board level

West Ham - based in East London, the area that was historically the first home to mass Jewish immigration from Eastern Europe during the Victorian period and has a sizeable jewish following to this day

Leeds - a club that has historically been owned by Jewish businessman that also owned the local mills

Chelsea - well they have long had a hardcore following of ultra extreme fans that don't like anyone other than white anglo-saxon british. Anyone remember the song their fans started when watching England games 'No Surrender'.

As for the campaign itself, I can understand why people such as David Baddiel wish the terms 'Yid and Yiddo' not to be used in the same way that and Irishman would take offence to the term 'Mick or Paddy'. On the other hand though if an Irishman uses the term 'Paddy' or a Black man uses the 'N word' then it's not deemed racist or offensive, so there are double standards in this world whether we like it or not.

Personally I don't think their campaign will have any effect.

Arsenal aren't the worst for it imo it mainly seems to stem from Chelsea and West Ham the former a lot more than the latter.

agree 100% with RichMc70 though Baddiel didnt seem to as concerned when he was on tv with Skimnner some years back :D

The purest example of "scum" in football I know

I hate them with a passion

I wonder how many of their "new" Irish fans, actually know about "real" Chelsea ?

You can understand his abhorrance at this as he is Jewish but his reasoning as to why Spurs fans should stop chanting Yiddo doesn't stack up and is actually embarrassing his argument.

Of course all racist chanting should be stopped but saying Spurs fans make it acceptable for anti semetic abuse to be prevalant because they chant Yiddo at their team is absurd.

Its like saying its ok to call someone the N word because he's a gangster rapper and uses that word in his lyrics. Or because cartain black people refer to each other as the N word its ok for an outsider to call them one.

Chelsea fan David Baddiel should concentrate on his own clubs fans and their disgusting gas noises when they come to the lane.

    Fan Update: Manchester City

The Police have informed us that they will continue to monitor for use of the Y-word by supporters during our fixture against Manchester City as they have at recent home fixtures. The Club advises any supporter that is warned and asked to stop chanting this word by Police, to follow these instructions in order to avoid further sanctions including possible arrest.

The Police have also confirmed to us that they will be adopting a zero tolerance approach to all forms of anti-Semitic abuse, as well as anything considered to be foul, abusive, homophobic or racist.

We therefore ask all supporters, both home and away, to be mindful of their language and behaviour at White Hart Lane.

The Club does not tolerate discrimination of any sort, on the pitch or in the stands, and the Police and our stewards shall take action against anyone heard using abusive, offensive or obscene language.

You do not have to put up with mindless supporters who are intent on ruining your experience with us, so use the system, report the individuals and let us take it from there. We will treat your correspondence in strictest confidence.

For our staff, it is better to monitor the problem as it is happening as we can view the area of concern on CCTV and deal with everything quickly.
The Texting Service has been used to good effect in enabling us to ban people for committing offences on matchdays in the past.

We have a fantastic atmosphere at the Lane and we hope everyone continues to focus their energies on cheering the team on

Some load of B****x in fairness, what's the story with it anyway? if thousands of fans are singing it at the one time do they just pick out two or three and take them away or what?

Two arrests made at the Sherrif game and one at the West Ham cup game, not sure of the circumstances. Interested to see if the Yid Army chant still goes around the stadium, they could hardly police that could they?!

Correction: it is an interpretation of the law.

Until anyone is convicted there remains uncertainty as to the basis of the MP's actions. Our Supporters Trust and the FSF certainly think there is sufficient defence against these charges.

BREAKING NEWS: The CPS has discontinued criminal proceedings against the 3 Spurs fans arrested for using the 'Y' Word. Statement to follow

Charges have been dropped against three football fans who were facing prosecution for using the word “Yid”.

Gary Whybrow, 31, Sam Parsons, 24, and Peter Ditchman, 52, were all hauled before magistrates after allegedly using the language at Tottenham matches last autumn.

Today the Crown Prosecution Service said the words could not legally be counted as “threatening, abusive or insulting” in the circumstances.
Baljit Ubhey from the CPS said: “In accordance with our duty to keep all cases under review we have conducted a senior level review of this case.

“It has now been concluded that, according to the Code for Crown Prosecutors, there is insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction, and that the cases against Peter Ditchman, Gary Whybrow and Sam Parsons should be discontinued.

“In considering whether a criminal offence could be proved we have to look objectively at the words used, and the context in which they were used. As part of the review, the context of the use of the words alleged in this case was reconsidered, and we have decided that, although the same words used in other contexts could in theory satisfy the criteria for ‘threatening, abusive or insulting’, it is unlikely that a court would find that they were in the context of the three particular cases in question.

“We have therefore concluded that there is insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction. This decision has no bearing on any other cases that may be brought to our attention and all cases will be considered on their own facts and merits.”

The trio were accused of a public order offence for using the word. Mr Whybrow, from west London, and Mr Parsons, from Amersham, Buckinghamshire, were charged after going to Tottenham’s Europa League match against FC Sheriff on November 7, while Mr Ditchman, from Bishop’s Stortford, allegedly used the language at the Tottenham game against West Ham on October 6.

Police had previously warned football fans not to use the word, which is used to refer to Tottenham fans and is regularly used in football chants.
For years Tottenham, who have a strong Jewish following, have been on the receiving end of anti-Semitic abuse from opposition fans.

In an act of defiance, some fans started using the word “Yid” themselves, and chants of “Yids”, “Yid Army” and “Yiddos” are regularly sung in the home stands at White Hart Lane.

Prime Minister David Cameron said he did not think Spurs fans should be charged for using the word, because it was not “motivated by hate”.
