    Hi all,

Can a Learner driver do the following:-
    • Do theory test in the north and get provisonal licence.
    • Get driving lessons in the republic from an approved instructor.
    • Do driving test in the north and, if successful, drive in the south under the northern licence.
I know people will say you have to change your licence over down here, but this is not true.
I have been driving here for over 30yrs with a northern licence, often been stopped by gardai and never had any problems.

No. Learner Permits are not valid outside the country of issue. An Irish Learner Permit is not vaild in the UK. And likewise a UK provisional is not valid in the republic.

Ok, so get learners permit here, provisional in the north, do lessons here, but do test in the north.

Would still work out cheaper that having to do a dozen or more lessons here.

Average person passing test in UK has taken 45 lessons. Link

Slightly different question in similar world [did not want to start new thread as it must have been asked before] - on learner permit and going north this weekend..

Can I drive up there on the learner permit [with someone in the car bla bla] - or can I only drive down here with it?

    The VaggaBond,

I dont think youd legally be able to drive in the north as the LP is only valid in the RoI. However, I would probably be willing to chance it. Depends though, you never know how to british police would react...probably not well.

You can't drive with a LP in any country other than the RoI.

They'll arrest you and take you to court for driving without a licence. If it's after court hours and you can't provide a local address to serve a warrant to to you'll be kept in the cells till the court opens. Also because a LP isn't valid outside the RoI you are driving without a valid licence and therefore to the UK authorities you have no insurance so they'll take your car off you.

And what would be the point of doing that even if it were possible?
