Advice on Tractors

    Hello all,
I made a thread about silage contracting a while back and got a great response, so I figured I'dgive this a go :)
I was just looking for a few opinions on tractors.
What's the best make to fill these few points:
    1) Not built too heavy for average ground
    2) Doesn't drink diesel like a hoor
    3) Fair quality for money
    4) Reliable when the going gets tough.

Now I'll admit 'tis near impossible to tick every box there but what would come closest? Throw down any opinions, ideas or thoughts ye might have.
    Thanks in advance,
    13spanner.

i would recommend a fiat 110-90 there pretty much bullet proof and the ford 7810 bullet proof aswell also the ford 7610 are great for winter going a bit less power though but still a good 100hp, depends though on your budget, year you want and power you want

The Ares is IMO one of the best tractors of the last 15 years and serious value for money second hand. I'd be a bit of a doubting Thomas about the 2100 hours on that particular one. The spec is also a bit funny as it's an RZ, which means cab suspension, but then it has a mechanical shuttle which is just wrong.

Anyway OP, a JD6930 or a MF 35X would fulfill the criteria you gave, so a little bit more info would be nice :)

7610's were far from bullet-proof when they were in their prime, never mind now that some of them are pushing 30 years old. 110-90's and 7810's are still crazily over-priced. If you're going for a tractor of that vintage in that price range you won't beat a Deutz 6.05 or 6.06.

Would you consider renting for the summer?, keep one machine and rent another from May - August?. Atleast you know your full cost of that machine straight off.

Lad, I've no idea what your budget is. But to be honest, for my recommendation, it doesn't matter, just get a newer one if you've more cash.

Anyway, get a Case or if cash is low, an International. If the weight of the tractor is an issue, then you want to stick below 100hp, as most older tractors over that are 6 cylinder, and hence heavier tractors for draught work.

The case tractors are little rockets, great on diesel, great in a tight yard, and the engines are generally very relaible. A 785XL/885XL for an older tractor, or if you need close to 100hp, try to get a 995XL.
