it's usually caused by bad ram

Could it be possible the ram is loose, I did let it fall the other night but I also done an OS update. Any way to pinpoint the problem.

A kernel panic can be caused by all manner of problems. You need to try and narrow things down. Disconnect any third party accessories. Check and see if the RAM is still being recognised in system profiler. You can also use an app called Rember to scan the RAM. You should verify the hard disk in Disk Utility as well. And maybe run a hardware test using the install disc (hold d on startup).

Was it a big fall? Was it on at the time?

Do you use the Cisco VPN client? It's known to cause kernel panics in Snow Leopard - I gave up on it and use the built-in vpn client now - way faster and no kernel panics.

As others have said, kernel panics are often hardware related, but can be software too. Check for anything you installed recently.

It fell off a bed side locker onto a wodden floor, sounded like a good tud, tried checking the disk and using rember to check the ram no faults found.
It hasn't asked me to power off in a few hours but is starting to stall even doing somthing simple like email. It's just not itself.
Gettting worried feel like it's going to implode shortly.
Not running and vpn's or anything like that.
Starting to get worried, I run my business off it.

Time for the doctor?? Anybody recommend one for out of warranty work, would apple do it, would it cost much? The only 2 things i've changed are adding an extra 2GB ram and upgrading the hard drive to 1tb, that's been done for ages.

Only software change was the osx update the day it fell. Not sure which is to blame...

Hard drive may be failing despite what Disk Utility is reporting. It's the most likely thing to get killed in the case of a fall. Listen for any unusual noise, louder than usual, coming from it. Everything tends to get slow when the HD is going. Make sure all your data is backed up.

Also check Activity Monitor and make sure there isn't any rogue background processes hogging the CPU.

Trying that now, the spinny coloured circle is coming up the whole time, seems like it's it's loosing the power to multitask. Not writing this off it it's taking to long to switch between apps. No funny sounds.

Kernel Panics are recorded in the logs. You will get pointers to what is causing your problem. To the Console, Batman!

Agree with Sad Professor on the Hard Disk possibility. It's the most likely thing to get damaged. If you have a spare hard drive you could swap it for the current one and either install a fresh OS or your timemachine backup to see if it behaves. If it appears to run OK, on a different drive - it's an easy fix. You can even install Snow Leopard on a USB stick if you wish (probably need an 8GB or larger one).

I'd also open up the machine and make sure nothing looks loose.

Anyway, make sure you have your stuff backed up safely.

I'll try that and see how it works, still have my old hard drive, even closing down a pdf is taking a few minutes.

    Thanks for all the tips..

How do I bring up that info?

    Edit; have it:

does this make any sense to anyone:

If you suspect your drive, go into your Terminal app. Type mount and see what your drive is. It will probably be disk0s2. Go into your Console app and select all messages ( Left hand column ). Type disk0s2 into the filter box and see if there any instances in the log. If there are your drive is on the way out.

    OOPS

    BACKUP NOW.

BTW The waking from sleep error seems to be drive access related too.

Was the computer running or doing anything while it was dropped. If the harddrive heads were reading or writing its quite possible this has cause damage.

Going to back it up shortly, one question on the back up I've windows7 under bootcamp, will super duper back clone the whole drive so when I reload the image onto a new hard drive both osx and windows 7 will be there as they are now.

    Any point reseating the drive?

Disk I/O errors are never good and personal experience of 'baby' hard drives would suggest that this is terminal. You can of course try any type of remedial action you think will improve things but be prepared for catistrophic failure. Have you dont the sbin/fsck -f thing in single user mode?

Just an update on this sorry I was away for a few weeks, still haven't swapped the hard drive as I don't think it's the problem. I have a new one readly to format but I think the hard drive is fine.

The warning screen with please shut down has disappeared completely. The kernel panics are still continuing under osx, no need to put the mac under pressurre.

Strange thing is I've been using Windows 7 under bootcamp all day today and there hasn't been one glitch.

It's strange, I can't figure it out, I'd presume if the hard drive was acting up i'd be getting the blue screen of death under windows but no.

Would I be right in my assumption that it's not the hard drive. How would I go about putting windows under pressure to see how it copes.

Dude - if you value your data grab an external drive and back everything up. It could be that the affected sectors don't contain any bootcamp data. If your drive has had a physical shock it could be on it's last legs.

I've seen my brother lose thousands of photos from a year in the US because he had no backups. He was up to me last week with a dead drive containing photos of his daughters first six months. They were recoverable. He now has 2 separate backups of those files.

Hard drive space is cheap. Data is priceless.

Now, having said all that, reseat your RAM. My MacBook used to Panic every couple of weeks for no reason. I upgraded the RAM a few months ago and the Panics stopped. I didn't think the RAM was dodgy, it just wasn't sitting right.

But FFS - back up your data.

This Mac doesn't have a SSD by any chance?

Try enabling hibernation in Win 7 and see if anything happens.

Logs dont lie, your drive is going to die. :)

Bigger problem. Trying to clone my Hard drive using super duper and it keeps failing. Any ideas? Any other way I can copy it to move to a new mac. I heard migration assistant won't being over photoshop etc but either way it will probably fail as well. :(

It's failing at the same point every time, if I made a time machine back up, will that move all my programs, or would I need to re-install adobe creative suite etc.

I'd recommend that you start manually backing up data in order of importance. Once you've got all the major stuff, try doing a TM backup. Yes, it will backup all your apps unless you tell it not to.
