    Hey,

i'll be doing my test in a months time. Im hoping to do it in my ma's car cuz thats the car Im most comfortable with, however there's two problems, there's a crack on the windscreen and the speedometer doesnt work...

Would i fail my test on account of these two issues with the car??...

    Thanks

I would get both fixed before the windscreen falls out on you!

If the crack on the windscreen isn't directly in the drivers line of sight it should be OK. Check your mothers insurance policy, she may have windsreen cover.

    Speedo is a definite fail.

if teh speedo isnt working you wouldnt pass the nct, as such the car is unfit for the road and unfit for the test.

    Hey,

........... and the speedometer doesnt work...

how on earth could you be driving around with a speedo not working and think that you could sit the driving test. the mind boggles at the thought that you've no driving licence and you think this is a safe way to go on public roads. I'm guessing you don't have a fully licenced driver accompanying you either.

Get that car off the road and fixed, nobody should be driving it
And most certainly do not try to use it for the test...

I reckon i'll chance it... sure its only a frickin speedometer like, its not like the cars gonna break down or anything!!

You taking the piss? You have to be, suppose you could just blame the speedo when ye driving over the speed limit. The tester will understand

Why put the effort into showing up for the test when you are going to be turned away?

The tester will not go out in a car unless it is road worthy and its illegal to drive around with a cracked windscreen and broken speedo. So the answer is you will be failed and will lose your money that you have paid

Assuming the OP isn't taking the piss ( he has to be right)?
If you look at my thread i started on Tuesday night you will see that the tester wouldn't even take me out because there was a warning light on my console.

I assume that answers your question.

The windscreen is conditional, on size and position. But you would not even get to sit your test with the speedo not working. The test would be stopped as soon as the examiner notices. Which would be fairly soon.

This isn't quite as straight forward as some posters are making out. In many cars the speedometer can't be seen from the passanger seat, in which case the tester can never mark you for going over the speed limit, however you can be marked for "speed for road conditions" or "speed for traffic conditions". If the OPs car has a hidden speedo the tester will never know that it's broken

If the tester goes out on the road with you, assuming the crack in the windscreen is ok, he can abandon the test if he spots that the speedo isn't working, however in that case he's obliged to give you a form which entitles you to a re-test for free. You only forfeit the test if he spots a fault before leaving the test centre, (the same would happen if you got a puncture or any other breakdown during the test).

I'm not condoning driving around with a broken speedo, but you may well get away with it.

You know that I and I know that Brian but I had a pupil in Tallaght recently marked for (speed) speed limits …In my car its physically impossible to see the speedometer from the passenger side even if you were to lean over you still cant see it (not a Yaris by the way) fortunately the student still passed.

    mark

You should definitely sort the windscreen but i'd say you could get away with borrowing a sat nav to sort the speedo problem as most of them will give you a speed readout (usually more accurate than a speedometer too). ;)

No good for the test. The car has to have a clear windscreen and AFAIK Sat Nav gives inaccurate speed readings on hills.

I think a tester would be happier with a car that would break down than one without a speedo.

Your test isn't until a month's time. You say you're most comfortable in your mam's car, which is why you want to use that. Why not use a different one for the next month and then for your test? A month is plenty of time to get used to a different car.

Thanks guys, i got the speedo fixed and getting new windscreen fitted Tuesday, it's just come to my attention that a dent on the back of the car may result tester refusing to let me sit the test. The car passed the NCT last summer with this dent in place so should it matter?????

Seriously considering using a different car at this stage...

Unless the dent has a sharp edge that can possibly cut someone it'll be fine. I'd say nearly all learner cars have a dent somewhere.

I think you'll find the correct word is 'thought', not 'taught'.
