Irish Rail smartcard problems

I got issued with an Irish Rail smartcard recently.

I'm finding that the readers are not scanning it intermittently and I cant use it to go through. It seems to be totally intermiittent and sometimes works at a station and sometimes not.
I spoke to a guy at Connolly who told me there was an issue with some of them - anyone else having problems?

Mine's a disaster at the ones in Pearse, Tara and Connolly. Works no problem in Rush & Lusk or Malahide. Whereas the one I'd last year worked in Dublin but not in the machines in R&L, Balbriggan or Malahide...

I get any number of spurious messages from the ticket machines, so they can detect the card, just not opening the gates.

And the few times it does work in Dublin, it takes ages to do so. the MTA replaced their turnstyles and one key design goal was to allow passengers swipe in without breaking stride.... something that seems to be missed in the IÉ spec

Ok , good to know its just not me. I might get mine replaced only its probably a long, convaluted process and is likely to up my stress levels.

In the meantime I've become quite the expert at tailgating ;)

Even the paper tickets don't work properly in the new ticket machines. I have had several occasions when the ticket will fail several times in one machine but work in the next machine or just work after several attempts as if the card readers are dirty.

I would think it is the machines and not the smart pass that is the problem.

If you can, record the time and machine and report it to Irish Rail at info@irishrail.ie marking it for the attention of the SmartCard team. Any problems let me know.

The guys monitoring the gatelines at the main stations do have a control panel that will identify certain problems, so try that also.
