Killing lawn to put down shrubs and stone

Folks I did a search but i didn't find an answer but I have a corner akward area to cut on the rideon so have decided to shrub it out. If I kill it with weed killer, how long do I have to leave it before I can put down the shrubs, weed protector and stone on top. The area is about 20ft square so any good suggestions on…

The area is about 20ft square so any good suggestions on shrubs on that to put in? Its just inside the gate to the right so it will be on view so it would be nice to have have some thing nice planted there.

Not a massive budget though.
