padding and shorts

    Hi Folks,

A quick question on short recommendations. At the moment I have a pair of De Marchi shorts and although they are fine they tend to move around a little in the padded area causing some discomfort. Being fairly new to the cycling game my question is what are your recommendations, bib shorts or normal, and what kind of pad should one desire in ones shorts.

My second question is, I have had my bike fitting by a pro, all the measurements taken and the bike adjusted accordingly, however after about 60k I tend to get some pins and needle sensation in the nether region, could this be caused by the saddle position or my shorts. I have checked the level of the saddle and it is level (checked with spirit level).

    All suggestions appreciated.

too big for u I would suggest . or are u wearing chamois cream or anti scuff cream on ur skin? the creams can hold them in place if they tend to move. mind moved before but just stopped moving again.

pins and needles in the nether region , blood supply reduced / cut of somewhere, try chamois cream , i usually apply direct to skin as i find it more effective that way. the creams contain anaesthetics sometimes,

The standard Bontrager R1 saddle on my bike did this to me... i tried adjusting it in every single direction and angle and nothing would get rid of that feeling. I was told it would just take time to get used to it so i left it a few months before buying a new one - got a saddle that had a higher sit bone position with a gap for the taint and havent had an issue since.

is the ground level where you checked your bike ? not sure how much difference that would make tbh

and are the shorts close fitting (they should be )

Lots, I'd imagine, you're actually setting your saddle to the gradient of the ground in this case. By level, you want parallel to the ground. Personally, I find it more comfortable on my current saddle with a tiny tilt forward, but that's just me.

Yea the ground was level, it was in a sports hall. I did not know about creams, maybe I should invest in a pot and see how that goes, any recommendations? Interesting point re the sit bone position though, thanks.

I had terrible pain from wearing shorts that were too big. I like them welded on to me fun boy style now.

What's the saddle? Does it have one of those "channels" along the middle?

Re chamois moving about: could be that the shorts are too big, as mentioned, though I have a pair of Santini shorts whose padding moves more than on my others, despite the shorts size being right for me. Probably worth trying on a smaller size in one of the local bike stores to see whether they fit you any better.

Re shorts versus bibs: it's a bit of a personal preference thing but bibs usually move around less as they don't get tugged at by the saddle as much for example. Personally I couldn't go back to shorts after my first pair of bibs, I find bibs much better for me.

Re pins and needles: as already mentioned it could be that the saddle is the wrong fit for you (too narrow, too wide, too firm, too soft, etc.) or it could be that you just need to adjust its position. A level saddle doesn't work for everyone. Also, even if it was fine before, if your position was adjusted as part of your bike fit then this might show up some issues with the saddle itself and/or its positioning in your new position. Saddle fit/comfort can be tricky to get right - you might find some useful info in this thread.

Deutschlandfürimmer7 suggests Assos, fine but assos is the very top end of the market.

the purpose of chamois cream is to protect ur skin from the constant chaffing from a dry chamois ( or padding) in the cycling shorts.

go out a few days in a row without chamois cream , then get a measure tape to measure the size of the boil that will develop. in the most awkward spot.

applying to ur skin is the best i find. the chamois will protect ur skin and prevent boils / rashs / chaffed skin, in the area that makes most contact with the chamois. Also a little bit around stitching or seams that are begining to break down, anywhere where excessive rubbing, will cause ras/ rw skin whihc will then develop skin boils. thats what ur trying to avoid.

doesnt have to be assos, can be any chamois cream. Even Sudocream is an excellent alternative: thats what ur trying to achieve with chamois cream Prevent nappy or chamois rash.

    Thanks folks,

I will nip out at the weekend and pick up a jar of cream and a pair of bib shorts and see how it goes from there. You guys are just a wealth of information, hopefully my golden nuggets will be in better shape in a week or two.

The saddle on the bike is the one that came with it, and no it does not have one of those hole things in the middle. The saddle thread is very interesting though.

    Cheers lads

    T

Maybe you have a better standard of "off the shelf" saddle but any "off the shelf" saddle I've ever used on a bike < 1k euro was quickly changed for a saddle with a "love channel".
I had a Trek 1000 that had a distinct dome shape to the stock saddle that put a lot of pressure on the "t'aint" :(
