3rd car in 3 months!?

If anyone can help me decide what car I want ...

I bought a BMW520i e60 3 months ago...just sold it there as I thought it was boring..my misses also thought it was too big....

So, 2 weeks ago I bought an 06 vw gti..nice car..and I got it as I wanted something fun and fast..but can you believe the novely has already worn off..I'm thinking of changing again..this time, I need a 5door as the missus wasnt happy with a 3 door, and I also want something faster, without costing too much extra to run....

As I just bought the gti, I may as well hold onto it for 6 months...but the next car I get , I want it to be a keeper, so figure I'll start researching it now...

any suggestions? Budget it about 12k...

Get the GTi remapped, lowered, Milltek exhaust (turbo back), upgraded intercooler and CAIS and tell the missus to get used to the three doors!

well the problem with the 3 doors is she minds kids..she said from word go she wanted a 5 door, but I agreed that if she didnt come to term with the 3 door, we could change for a 5 door.

Like most things, I rushed into the gti..I swore I would take my time and 1 of the things I wanted was leather..but went for cloth!

I do like the gti, so I suppose an option is to trade it in for a 5 door leather(may be hard to find) and get some mods done like you suggested.

Ill probably be raped on a trade in though..the one I have now is a 06...Ill prob go for a 07 5 door..do those mods you mention(apart from the remap) cost a lot!?

Maybe confer with SWMBO on the next purchase and get a car that isn't too big and has the practicality of the a 5 door.

2 cars and both wrong for your needs seems to me like spur of the moment purchases. You need to take your time.

EDIT: oops just re-read your budget.... but you get the idea...;)

just to add, 1 thing about the gti I'm not crazy about is the fact its a bit noisier than I'd like on idle..I suppose this is understandable coming from a 6 clylinder BMW which sounded lovely..but I'm led to believe that and direct injection engine will be bit noisy on tick over? Anyway, I can deal with it, as the car makes up fo that is so many other ways.

what do people think of a civic type r compared to the gti?

nice, but not mad on alfas..anyway am after something around the same size as a golf..

Currently, my gti has 3 previous owners(me being the 4th)..if I was to sell this in the coming months, would that be considered a high number of owners/would I be shafted on the price if trading in? Or should I sell private?

Might be hard to find here, but what about an S3 sportback (5 Door)?

265BHP in a car of similar size to the Golf and with Quattro, will make for a very entertaining yet comfortable car.

Can they be got for €12k though?

no! without a doubt..if I had the cash this would be the car for me! Love it...just too expensive:(

my budget is 12kis all in...If I sell the golf private..I'll be looking toget a minimum on 10k..so ill have another 2-3k to add to that..

Am I alone in thinking WTF

OP, you had 2 or 3 threads running in the last fortnight, probably totaling 20+ pages, fretting over choosing between an Astra OPC or a GTI... then we had the condition of the GTI alloys.... and now you're right back to square one 10 days later? LOL.

You'll struggle to find a 5-door S3 in this country... not sure many (or even any?) were sold. And if the engine noise bothers you that much in the GTI, you'll have the same (or worse) concerns in the S3.

yep, I understand where your coming from!

I'm a bit of an impulse buyer..trying to work on it! tbh, I like the gti...but I do have a little regret not waiting for the rite leather one. I have no regrets going for the 3 door as I think it looks waaay better, but as the missus kinda needs a 5 door (actually I dont think she does need 1, but is just being awkward!) I would be happy with a 5 door leather, but again, I think this is hard to find...

Use the spare 2-3 grand you have to get the missus a small 5 door car.
    Keep the gti for yourself.
    ......
    Profit :)

she paid for half of the gti! that wouldnt go down well!..she loves the gti, but says the 3 door is a pain ...she hated our last car(which is why we didnt keep it long) as it was too big and too expensive to run. She is fussy enough but in her defense , she made it clear she didnt think a 3 door would work before we went for the gti...I guess I need to listen to het more:o

If you listen to her less you could keep the GTi and not waste money moving it on for another car in such a short time frame ;)

Buy a second small car with 5 doors. Pick up a gag or turn up the radio so you can't hear her give out :P

well as she did pay for half of the car..I can only hope she will come to term with the 3 door while were looking for a suitable 5 door...as long as the change doesnt cost us too much for what were getting, I'll be happy enough.

I may stick it up on done deal for 10,500 with a view to getting 10k(wouldnt sell it for less)...but is 3 previous owners on a 06 car considered high i.e would that have much of an impact on what the car is worth?

I'd say you will loose your shirt on the GTi if you go to sell it on so quickly.

On the other hand if you need 5 doors then maybe something like this would suit. Same engine and platform as the GTi:
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201115201967229

Best you could hope for probably is a straight swap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Yes I think it would. It would raise questions in my mind about why previous owners got shot of it within short time frames.

I may be biased but what about a Scooby?

yes, I like those, but too big! cars I have in mind would be focus rs, another gti, astra opc etc that type of size..though I would no longer consider the OPC as didnt like the test drive..and the rs is a 2.5, would rather 2.0

You'd never get an RS for anywhere near €12k!! Do you mean an ST?

Octavia is 2.0 litre and in the same class as the Golf, Astra and Focus. It just has the infamous big boot. :D It is pretty much a Golf underneath too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Yes, I assume he means ST! OPC is three door only, another reason its now a non runner.

The octavia isn't that "big". It's based on the Golf platform afterall. I reckon it would be a good compromise on space, number of doors and performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The Seat Leon FR could also be worth looking at, again same car underneath as the GTi and Octavia:

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201110201531040

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201110201531040

Interior is a let down though imo.

    Get a new missus tbh...

Also I think the tartan interior in the Golf is actually nicer than the leather. Anyway I don't think we can help you, you need to take the missus along and test drive as many cars as possible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

Bit odd to be honest. You have about 6 threads on 2 forums asking about GTIs and then a few days after buying it your selling it because it doesn't have enough doors?
I've a feeling you are selling because you are worried about the noise at idle. I've said it before and I'll say it again this is present on loads of them. It's your money but it's strange behaviour.

The Civic type R is nice but it's totally different. You have to rev it hard and it's less good at motorway cruising. Leon is the same car. Focus is good, OPC... deja vu.

Sound advice lets just hope the OP takes it.

How many kids you got that you need 5 doors? Or you have 3 kids or your only child is pretty fat...

Misses was minding a child for friends almost daily. She was doing it Opel calibra... Newer had trouble. Unless your misses is "healthy from chipper" and can't bend now and then to the back seat...

Ih yeah, one girl has a child and Toyota celica. No trouble too.
