I know the first thing to do when you start a new job is to hand in your last P45 so they can account for your wages. However I finished up my last job and got a P45 in 2010 and now I am beginning a new job in 2011, so do I still need to hand in my P45 from last year or whats the alternative?

As you are now in the new tax year, your P45 from 2010 is not relevant to your new job. For the new job, you need to get a new Certificate of Tax Credits and Cut Off Point from Revenue. Ring the Revenue PAYE Helpline 1890 333 425 (for Dublin region), for outside Dublin, see contact details here http://www.revenue.ie/en/contact/index.html. You will need your new employer's PAYE/PRSI registered number and your own PPSN when you contact Revenue.
