Why are they specifically called 'killer whales'?

    How unusual would this be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 261 ✭✭kevthecelt

Well they've been known to kill purely for sport as shown in David Attenborough's documentary 'Blue Planet'

Why are they specifically called 'killer whales'?

Because it sounds much cooler than Black and White Seal-Munching Whale.

Offically they're Orca but everyone calls the killer whales. They're the top predators in the ocean. They've been spotted numerous times in the Irish Sea and are often in Irish waters. The best chance of seeing Whales or Dolphins in Dublin is from Howth Head with some decent binoculars to use once you've spotted them. It can be surprising difficult to spot anything from a boat especially if there's any kind of chop.

I would be worried if I were one of the seals in howth harbour even though alot of Orca eat nothing but fish.

But technically everything 'kills'. Do they kill purely for the lulz?

Why are they specifically called 'killer whales'?

I think they are more closely related to porpoises and dolphins that other whales. I read ages ago that they used to be called whale killers yonks ago as they feed on small whales; the name then got flipped around to killer whale. The clip belwo shows a pod hunting down a mother and calf grey whale.

    HA!

They aren't idiots, they are knows as Killer Whales in certain parts of the world, black fish in other parts and Orca in other parts. Orca comes from the latin name I think. They are called killer whales cause they are carnivores.

actually seen a good documentary on these a while ago, they constatnly learn from their surroundings and plan kills on prey before they do them, and then the learn from every kill and if something goes wrong they dont do it the next time... just in general they rule the ocean's, they are top predator in them. it showed a video of them sneaking up and killing great whites with ease!

The correct scientific name is Orcinus orca which is where Orca comes from.

Spent the day out on the bay yesterday, no sign of the killer whales. They must have moved on.
