Fan Service

A discussion began in the Spring 2011 Anime Season thread regarding fan service and the increase/decrease of such content in anime over the last decade. I've moved the posts over here as I feel this discussion warrants it's own thread.

So here you go - all things fan service!

Hmmm...anfortunately there hasn't been much around the last 2-3 seasons....they seem to focus on mindless Harem animes, fan service or fighting. There are (imo) a few nice ones though.

    - Just checked out Hanasaku Iroha, which is promising
    - Astrarotte no omocha is nice too, though personally I like the Manga better so far.
    - 30-sai no hoken Taiku is silly but ok to watch if you like slapstick.

That's about it from this season I guess....looking forward to the next one, hopefully more variety....

    Chessala: you kidding?
Anime has been nothing but fanservice for ten years.
If you can ignore most of it, you can enjoy the stories. That's what I've been doing for the past year or two and it's working for me.

That depends what fanservice is for you. For me that means tons of girls with big breasts and panty-shots. Every anime will have some amount of fan service people can enjoy but what's too much is too much. The last seasons have been so packed with especially harem that it is difficult to pick anything that doesn't evolve around half-naked girls.

Not trying to bash anyone's taste, mind you. Some of those series have a somewhat nice story and I am willing to give those a try. Just missing the times when animes where the girls wore clothes were in the majority....

Yeah, it's been like that for a decade.

I am pretty sure there was quite a few less of those series not even 2 years ago =/

Not really sure what your problem with my opinion is but I know better than get even more in a silly conversation like that Oo

They're pretty much all re-tellings, or music videos.
I'm hard-pressed to remember if one of them was actually new, but I'm relatively sure none were new.

I don't have a problem with your opinion, I just think your opinion has been valid for at least 10 years.

2 years ago, there was less anime in general.

Nollag is right though, the percentage of fanservice has stayed pretty constant.

If people are gonna be going all e-peen, by the way. I expect stats of how much anime people have watched. Only way to get respect.

I didn't think we were arguing.
I thought we were agreeing, with different views on the severity.

What is wrong with a bit of fan service.:P

Haha nothing really, problem is when pure fan-service anime takes over.

I don't really think you can say it like that. It's more like anime has not been as spread in Europe 2 years ago as it has been now, that doesn't mean there has been less.

Don't really think we were arguing either. We agreed to disagree XD

Really, I think it depends on how ppl define fan service. For me a series that has 1 char that offers some fan service here and there or that has gigantic breasts is not automatically a pure fan service series. What I am refering to are series like Kämpfer and in general all the harem series that have been popping lately.

freezing, queens blade, and co are what I call antai.
    automatically don't watch.

A flash or two is fine, if not good. But too far is too far, and too much is too much.
Take Occult Gakuin as an example, Maya's dress is skintight, but there were only 3 or 4 risqué angles in the show.
The fan service in HOTD was ridiculous, and ruined the series almost.

You're not allowed to complain about fanservice until you've watched Agent Aika & Goldenboy.
    And watched AMV Hell 0.

Well, we are talking about the same kind then. One series that really was bad in that regard as well was Seikon no Qwaser. Tried watching it for the story but ultimately gave up

@Kiki: I have watched those lol. Goldenboy was funny in some aspects but Aika is really not my cup of tea. Ah well...

    Re growth of anime:
    Spring 2011 anime: (48 titles)

    Spring 2009 anime: (40 titles)

Fairly big growth. (pun intended) but I'll admit it's not THAT big, and I did exaggerate wildly

Well, that's just about new series that started. That doesn't mean more animes are around now as it could be that more titles finished this season and therefore there is more new stuff.

To really know the growth you would have to find out how many different series have been running in a year. You'd also have to know how many started and ended and if airing time was taken by something else than an anime

I heard the DVD versions gave up any pretense of plot, and focused on the PLOT instead.

Wait a second, you reduce the count of anime in a year to 3 months? Wow...I am impressed ^^

And why did the 142 from 2009 (which is in my notification mail) suddenly decrease to 83? I would REALLY like to know that ^^

ALSO, you excluded quite a few things on your searches as you can not just count series and movies. If you include everything in the list the one from 2009 goes to 116, which in my book is still bigger than 97 (the list from 2011 stays at 97)

    I don't think it's fair to count:
    Music Video
    Other
    OVA
    TV Special
    Web

So I edited my post to remove them.

Had I included them, the figures would be:
    142
    99
    124

    making it 142 for 2009 and 223 from 2011...

Well, they have been produced so I think they should be counted. Still, the list from 2009 is missing series that run through the time periods.

Nonetheless, I think it is still not possible to get the anime count of a year from one season, sorry.
Also, you can't just compare 2 years, you need a realistic graph over...lets say...the last years to see if there are really that many.

Mind you, I never intended to say that there might not be more animes out now....of course the industry will develope....I was just intending to point out that there are not 500+ more anime now as it sounded to me like that

I'm giving you a sample of data which I believe to be indicative of an overall trend. If you want me to change my opinion (which surely you should), then all I ask is that you show some evidence to back your claim instead of rejecting my evidence!

There has definitely been a massive growth in anime release over the past 10 years, obviously you'll ignore this data as inconclusive, buuut

I don't know what the insult is about but if it makes you happy.

Anyway, I am always willing to accept (valid) data and admit where I am wrong. Please also note my clarification from the last post.

Last but not least: You have way too much free time on your hands, go watch some fan service (which is the original purpose of this thread anyway)(note: this is a joke, not an insult)

Just a little note here: If you compare the numbers from 2001 and 2002 you'll see that there are actually less (new series) in 2002. Not making a point, just saying.

Fan service? More "boing" can only improve the situation.

Is it too late to join this thread?

I've read through it twice and I'm still finding it difficult to figure out exactly what you're talking about.

For me, when I mention fan service, I'm talking about panty-shots, and scenes where a female characters boobs spontaneously jiggle. This is the kind of stuff I've no time for in my anime.

This has been around for years. As long as I've watched anime. Though it was arguably more innocent in bygone years. I certainly can't remember anything like Freezing or Queen's Blade even six or seven years ago. If we go even further back. In Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still; Gin Rei was, in my opinion at least, 1990's idea of fan service. She's practically a nun compared to some modern anime.

There is a lot of fan service in anime, but it's not all encompassing. It's quite noticeable how some stronger shows don't rely on it. Katanagatari, The Tatami Galaxy, Samurai Champloo. These shows feature little, if any, fanservice.

Not to say that a show with fanservice can't be good. It's used sparingly to good effect in some places like Bakemonogatari and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. In show's like these, you feel that the director is using it intentionally to draw the attention of the viewer or give them an idea of how the characters in the scene might be feeling.

For a more gratuitous use of fanservice which results in terrible shows and shames us all, see Strike Witches or Highschool of the Dead.

Highschool of the Dead was created by a hentai author.

On another note, do NOT ;) do a search for Rei Hiroe's other pen-name, Tex-Mex.
