Rent Allowance

    Hi Im living at home at the moment but am looking to move out .Im currently receiving social welfare and was just wondering would I be eligible for R.A straight away if i got my own place, looked on the welfare website but its very unclear! Thanks

    No, you wouldn't be entitled to claim rent allowance straight away.

    You have to be renting for a minimum of six months before applying for rent allowance.

    Depending on your reason for moving out, you may get something from your local community welfare officer (cwo) but it's doubtful to be honest. Unless you are in literally out on the streets, I wouldn't have any hope of receiving any financial assistance towards rent if you have not been renting for six month.

    If you have been paying rent for a minimum of six months and can prove this, you could apply for rent allowance and see how you get on.

    You could also have your housing need assessed by your local authority and if they say you need housing, then you may get rent allowance.

    Living at home doesn't count, I'm afraid. Unless he was literally renting, he'd need to prove it with a rent book or whatever the thing is called.
