Following on from my Gran Canaria thread, I was wondering if anyone had been in Portugal recently? I was wondering how expensive it was, around Faro in particular?

    :)

Portugal is cheap as chips, 2 expresso's in a lisbon cafe will set you back about 80c, 2 bottles of beer in your typical 'local' bar cafe in the algarve would be around 1-2 euro each.

Portugal is most enjoyable (in my experience) if you ignore the fancy restaurants & bars and head to the restaurants where the locals eat with plastic tables and chairs and top quality seafood with silly cheap prices.

Away from the Algarve, Portugal really is great value. It's as bamboozle said, if you pass a restaurant (which looks more like a greasy spoon caff) and there are loads of locals, then you're on to a winner. Seafood there is amazing, as is frango - barbecued chicken.

A lot of the Algarve is geared around tourists, so it can be a lot more expensive. My advice would be to go to Lisbon and resorts such as Caiscas (can also be quite dear so be choosy) or further away, Eirceira or Nazare - this is where the Portuguese go on holidays and they take no tourist prices nonsense. To give you an idea what to expect, we paid €1.20 for a bottle of beer and a glass of wine in Eirceira last year!
