    http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/13042011/58/premier-league-seven-figure-pay-west-ham-flop.html
The South African striker signed from Blackburn Rovers for £2.25m in January last year and the Hammers have been paying him £38,000 a week in wages.

However, the 33-year-old has had a terrible time at Upton Park – failing to score in any of his 14 appearances.

He has been completely left out of Avram Grant's 25-man squad, and the club even fined him £200,000 at one stage for failing to control his weight.

With 15 months still left on his contract, West Ham decided to cut their losses and give him a huge pay-off rather than let him wait out his contract, which would have seen him pocket another £2.3m.
Another mercenary striker bites the dust. Shocking to see the state of him in recent photos.

I remember watching him in Portos successful champions league campaign and thinking, "Hes going to be a big player"

    How right I was.

Never knew clubs could do this, Glen Crowe would be in millions of debt....bohs would be balancing and Fingal aspiring to great heights.

He was a good player, he'll still play for some championship/league one side and do well imo. Although pace was always on his side.

Yeah but think of the cash they would have lost at the Burdocks hatch.

I'd would be suspicious of that 200k fine for not losing weight

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,404 ✭✭✭✭vicwatson

    Goodbye !!

The weight was only part of the fact that he couldn't play footie, he was offered 1 million a couple of months ago, he obviously wormed another 0.5 million out of us !

When your national team doesn't want their best player at the World Cup it says a lot !

Made up for it by banging in goals against Rovers at ease. Legend. ;)

He actually lost all that weight, the problem was he lost it too quick and suffered the complications from losing too much weight too fast.

Really? Where did you hear that? What complications?

I'd be surprised if that was true, was only 1.5-2 stone he had to lose I reckon.

Toure had complications with trying to lose weight also...

Couldn't believe at the time West Ham paid that much for him, Blackburn would have bit their hands off, I'd say they'd have been happy just to get him off the wage bill!

He had lost the run of himself there, thought he deserved first team football when he was putting in zero effort in training.

I read it in february some time when he was offered the 1 mil pay off. He was challenged to lose the weight by staff at the club over a certain period and they then became worried about him becuase he lost it way too fast.

There are some obvious complications like starving yourself, he was doing it the wrong way. He had no energy to train etc because of it and there was muscle atrophy (loss of muscle bulk) as a result.

It just shows exactly why football club owners should keep their fkin noses out of football affairs on the pitch. How much did they spend on him from fans pockets?

Il try and find the link but i aint lookin right now, watching the game on the telly.

I really can't stand Sullivan and Gold.

If they're so concerned with interfering then maybe one of them should go and get their coaching badges and take the job themselves. The only reason they went anywhere near West Ham was because of the Olympic Stadium and they've continued to fleece the fans with high ticket prices but get away with it because they're two ''East End Geeezers'' who love the club. Yeah right

Just look at the stash of goodies in the drawers. I think its where the problem started.

They've done loads for the club, don't have a breeze what you're on about to be honest. Where did you get the notion they're fleecing fans?

It's also good ridance to McCarthy. A professional footballer who couldn't get himself fit deserves what he gets to be honest. Just a shame we have to compensate him. If he couldn't be arsed getting himself fit to represent his national team when the world cup is being held there for probably the only time ever, you have to question him.

It makes me wonder when players get these big payoffs. In any other profession if you're unfit to do your job you get fired simple as, minus the 1.5 mil payoff. I noticed someone posted that he'll get a team in the championship to take him? I doubt it at this stage. His attitude sucks and his weight and general physical condition are not up to the demands of professional football even at championship level.

Yeah I remember reading that too, lost the weight way too quick and ended up losing any pace he had as he lost too much muscle mass.

He only signed for West Ham because he thought there'd be free meat.

If I'm not mistaken Sullivan was born in Cardiff ! I somewhat agree with you but at least we hope they will be a stabilising influence on the club (staying up is vital), they are the best we've had in the last 15 years I reckon.

    Rubbish.

In his first season at Rovers he scored 18 times in 36 Premier League appearances.

In his second season with Roque Santa Cruz having a fantastic season he still managed 23 starts and 8 goals.

In 2008/09 where we were in trouble under Ince until December he managed to grab 10 league goals in 18 starts and 10 sub apps.

After that the fitness issues started to become a problem.

I was under the impression that the most a club could fine a player was 2 weeks wages.
