Buying used car - registered pre'08 Petrol or Diesel for cheaper tax?

I'm looking to buy a used car. Based on my budget I anticipate that it will be old enough to have been registered before 2008 - when the CO2 motor tax basis kicked in. So I assume it will be taxed on the engine size instead.

My question is, will having a petrol or a diesel engine make any difference to the tax band? I can't see any differentiation on the lousy motor tax website.

    Any help would be appreciated!;)

No, engine size is all that matters pre 2008.

When did the new system kick in - was it Jan 1, 2008?

    That's what I was thinking Stevie D.

The new system started in July 2008 but I believe was backdated to Jan 2008.

    1 July 2008.

But cars registered from January 2008 onwards which were taxed under the old rules were swapped to the CO2 rules on first registration after July 2008, if it was beneficial to the owner financially to do so, i.e. lower of the two rates applies.
