Painting kitchen table and chairs

Got a lovely cream table and chairs for a kitchen when we moved in last July but sadly the dog decided to chew the legs of the chairs (and some of the seats)

I plan on trying to fix them this summer but not sure how to go about it. I will need to sand down the legs (as lightly as I can so they dont look uneven) but wondering is there a particular paint I should be using? Should they we treated first or varnished after?

    Thanks in advance
