Delphi parts quality

    Stuck a pair of Delphi brand droplinks on today, these ones have a hex head inside the threaded shaft.
    Nut is a 17mm Nyloc nut, you would think the hex would be metric as well?
    Tried a 4mm, no good, tried a 5mm, wouldn't fit.
    Tried the underused 3/16 allen key, Perfect.

    What the hell is going on Delphi/Lockheed?
    Thats some sloppy manufacturing TBH.
    Ok I admit I probably wouldn't have the same complaint if I used OEM Toyota ones but given that they last about the same as spurious on these tracks (can't really call them roads)
    Why waste money on a part thats going to have to be replaced in short order and gives fair warning of failure?

    Sounds mad, but Delphi is an American company so there's your answer. The other part is metric (M12?) because metric measurements in Toyota.

    Delphi is/was AC Delco which was a subsidiary of GM.
    But GM is known as Opel on this side of the Atlantic and uses metric fittings on its Opel/Vauxhall vehicles.
    I just don't think that a mix of fasteners is acceptable on a new part.
    Use Metric or Imperial not both on the same threaded part.

    Are you sure it not an all imperial fitting, a 17mm spanner/socket is an almost perfect fit for a 11/16ths nut.

    I don't see how that effects the quality of the parts, I've used delphi for years and never had any returns or warranty issues.

    The threaded shaft that has the little allen key fitting in the end, does it not also have 2 flat sections on the joint end so you can hold it with a 17mm spanner while you tighten the nut?

    No these ones didn't have those flats, there is only the allen hex.
    The actual part and function of the part is probably fine my issue is mixing fastener sizes, it just shouldn't be done. Its still a quality issue.
    Interesting point Slimmjimmc I hadn't thought of that, the fact that imperial sizes are being used at all was interesting but all the fasteners, Hmmmm.
    You wouldn't reasonably expect to buy a brand new aftermarket part for a Japanese car and have to use imperial tools to fit it would you?
