Have a few bits to do around the farm that i'll need a digger for most of it and was planning on hiring out a digger during the summer for a week or so instead of hiring a digger with a driver! But would need to have my ticket for the digger to hire one! I have driven one before so i have a bit of experince but just wondering where can i go to do the test for it and roughly how much will it cost! im in the roscommon area!
    Cheers

You don't need a ticket to hire a small digger for yourself

I think the ticket could be up on a grand to do.

Where abouts in Roscommon are you?

AFAIK you don't need it as it is not a legal requirement, like a driving licence etc. As far as I can see it's just a CIF / FAS /CITB moneymaking racket on the same lines as the safe pass ticket, designed to keep safety officers, course instructors etc. in their cushy jobs.
You may detect a note of sourness in my post as I have already replied to a similar post last year, I had a machine ticket from UK, told it was not valid in Ireland, had to sit
tests in each category in Ireland (quite expensive) and received my 'Irish' ticket, issued
by the same body as my UK ticket.
My ticket was not renewed on time (due to issuing body in Ireland sending documents to wrong address - they managed to send bill to correct
address!! ) and they now refuse to renew my ticket and insist I have to complete training and testing in each machine category again. I have spoken to a good few people in the
same situation and it seems nothing can be done about it. If I forget to renew my HGV licence for a few months no problem renewing it again but a different story with CITB.

Possibly because CITB are the greatest shower of useless bureaucrats ever to grace the face of our fine planet, closely imitated and matched by those leg-ends in FAS. Oh yeah, and you don't need a ticket to hire and drive a machine on your own ground, if your hirer demands one, demand another hirer. Tickets(racket)apply to sites, last time I checked, my farm was not a site. I also hire diggers a lot, both for site work and for farm work. In neither case have I ever been asked for a ticket, even though I have one.

Thanks for all your replys everyone. Im from the knockrockery side of roscommon! Was hoping to hire a 12 tonne because wanted to tidy the drains in some fields and widen a few keches and knock an old house in one of the fields! what money would i be looking at for a week, i was roughly hoping it will be around €750 a week without driver!
