    Hi,

Anyone recommend a small cheap a/c unit.

We are looking to get one for the living room apartment. It get very hot duing the day and we need to keep our pet chinchillas cool.
Can't leave the doors open when in work and the windows don't seem to generate enough airflow to keep the place cool enough.

Don't really want to use a fan as they dislike breezes but a small a/c unit placed away from them in the room would do the job nicely I figure, only trying to keep the temp down below 20 really.

Any suggestions as to what may be suitable?

You will still need to duct an air conditioning unit to the outdoors through a window.

My suggestion would be to leave some windows open, and also run the fan in the kitchen and the bathroom. That will create a good bit of air circulation.

Is solar gain an issue? You might need to cover the window a bit.

Any of the cheap air conditioners would do fine in a fairly closed-down situation like this, providing you can exhaust them. It's a matter of getting the sizing right. On the other hand, any of them will go screwy if they are overloaded.

I would suggest you address the solar gain issue rather than look at a/c.

Solar gain is best addressed by a sun shade of some description outside the glazing. Once the suns rays get inside the glass its hard to mitigate the solar gain

If u google for awnings or vertical awnings u would be surprised whats out there: some nice gear for fitting on balconies

You could go with a B&Q portable or similar, you will need to vent it, you could vent using the extractor fan if needed.

There are also these like you see in the states in apartments.
