Debenhams to open in Carlow

According to a report from Colliers, Debenhams are set to join Pennys in the Kennedy Avenue development.
Marks & Spencer are also set to locate there with one of their simply food & compact fashion offerings (similar to Newbridge)

Now, the Town Centre & Fairgreen both need to either take this as an opportunity and join together and market the entire Carlow town shopping facility as a single entity and provide some sort of shuttle service so that there is no need to park in 3 locations to do a little shopping.

But having past experience of those involved, there is no chance of this happening.:(

Plans on hold due to objections from local interests. May never happen now.

The one in newbridge is aledgedly closing at the end of the month due to high rent(staff have been given protective notice)

That line has been going since they opened. "Dunnes are moving in" "Marks and spencer are taking their unit" etc. etc. In centres like these. the main store gets a very good deal on rent as they are the attraction for other stores. So i doubt very much if there's any truth in that long standing rumour.

The staff have been given notice that there being let go. A bit more than a rumour i think.

Some staff might be on notice due to sales not reaching targets, but its the same with many retailers. Its completely diiferent than saying all staff are on protective notice.

I have a few contacts in the commercial property area and I can absolutely say they are not pulling out of whitewater.

I hope this happens, I like Marks and Spencer. Only worry if it does go ahead is whether the town can support another couple of big retailers. It'd be a shame to see a new development go ahead only to have Superquinn downsize.

It would be brilliant for the town centre if that happened. The heart has been ripped out of it in the last few years.

BUT we still need a decent book shop :D;)

    I'd say this maybe true.

I've been told recently that Boots planned move to FairGreen has been taken off the cards as they are now waiting to setup shop in the new Pennys development as they will be positioning themselves with bigger Brand name Stores.

Lets hope this much needed development starts soon, I know loads of people who could do with the work from it. From building to operating.
