Poll: Do you use the Limerick Tunnel for commuting?

    Hi All,

I see threads on what a rip-off and completely pointless exercise it is etc., but what about day-to-day drivers.

Will be interesting (if not obvious) to see the results.

    Most countries I've been in have House > Off-Ramp > Motorway > Off-Ramp > Work

Seems any configuration as above is charged in Ireland, M50 being another example. I usually see a mad rush for that last exit for Limerick City to avoid the toll on the way back from Shannon.

Do you use the tunnel to commute to and from work 17 votes

NO, it's too far out of my way to use it from Cabinteely to Cherrywood ;)

i don't use it for commuting, but if i need to get to shannon, ennis, galway etc faster from where i live in co. limerick i'll use the tunnel, for example using the tunnel any time of day i can get to shannon airport in 30-35 minutes, if i go through town it would take 45 minutes easily, and could be (has been on a couple of occasions before the tunnel opened) more than an hour if there's bad traffic or roadworks.it's handy for that, but i probably wouldn't use it every day

The novelty of using it wore off after 3/4 times, now just spin in by jurys and out the dock rd. So no, I'm happier to give the extra litre's tax to the irish government and my local petrol station.

My other half uses it daily, the €1.80 is saved in petrol and it knocks 20-30 mins off her commute. Nobodys forced to use it and its nice to have the choice.
It wouldn't have been built unless it was tolled so I don't see the problem
I can now do ennis to cork in 90 mins.

I use it only going to work as the exit is very near my work :) Traffic is generally light enough on way home, so don't bother then.

It could have been done much smarter however - for example the Government owning and building the tunnel and the loan is paid back every day by the drivers.

Eventually the repayments are paid off and it's usage is free.

Its usage will be likely eventually free anyway, when its returned to the state after the contract period.

Do you know what the length of the contract is?

Also, it's just another cowboy company operating this tunnel. On their homepage it says "Signing up for electronic payment will save you even more time and money!".

They then charge you €1.80 X no. of trips you select AND they charge you €1.25 a month extra for the convenience!

35 years from 2006. Road must be handed back in good condition with a surface with 10+ years lifespan left.

Ha - take a look at Dublin's Eastlink (which still charges)!

The Eastlink was tendered for by Dublin City Council not the NRA hence the contracts are entirely different. It is an R road after all.

Or the other option is just block the roads into the tolls. A one day blockade might do some damage. Ha, could you imagine on the M50 :D

Let's keep the ball rolling on this one - the more votes the better.

Would be interested to see the results on a similar pole for the M50, I think the results would be quite the opposite.
