Anyone see TV3's Xccelerate, they had a special segment on the Irish navy. They launched a 'killer tomato', a bag of wind, the size of a van, to sea. *Low and behold, our expert gunner, failed to hit it with at least a half dozen shots from 1000 meters. They at least could have edited the video, his first shot landed in a different parish. *

If Al Qaeda had to have raised the Titanic and sailed it into port with Bin Ladin as captain I fear they would have nothing to worry about.*

Due to the fact that firing from a ship is not a stable platform due to the fact of the wave action and the ship pitching and rolling. When you fire from a ship not only does a gunner have to allow for gravity but also the motion of the ship. Hence why gunners lead into the target and allow the rolling of the ship to raise the muzzle upwards. Shooting fom a ship is alot more complicated then a person might imagine. During the battle of Jutland the battle quote was "there is something wrong with our ships today" as unable to hit their target

fortunately I don't think anything van-sized will have much chance of firing back at a kilometer down range or pose much threat.

Actually that quote was in relation to German gunners blowing up two British cruisers with only a few shots. :)

Anyway, I'd hope in this day and age that there'd be some sort of computerised fire control and ranging system that would take care of all the variables automatically..

As other's have said, firing off a ship is a lot more difficult then from land, especially given the size of the Irish Naval Ships and their tendency to roll heavily in any bit of weather. You're talking about something you know nothing about

Well as you probably know the RN could not get range correct and found it very hard to get any shots on target. While the germans did sink 2ships at this stage ,if it was not because of good damage control(flooding of magazines etc) more would have been lost. This all had happened by the time the second ship was sunk

    More happened afterwards

Several British ships literally exploded, which I believe prompted the quote.

It is thought that in order to get their rate of fire increased, cordite was being stored between decks rather than in the magazine. It should have been impossible for a fire to spread from the gun to the magazine due to an intricate system of lifts, but storing the cordite where they did meant a fire could cause a chain reaction eventually igniting the magazine.

Yes but HMS Hood (WWII)took a direct hit to magazine and sank almost immediately(so magazines can take a direct hit). The storing of ammo between decks was a problem for the Battle of Jutland. However the RN was more into a high rate of fire while Germany training was based on better accuracy. On the day the German firing tactic proved to be the best. Until that time which was the best tactic was unknown. The RN was firing at the German ships problem was that they were missing there target.
