    Hi,

Can anyone tell me the price for a ticket to get from Dublin to Cork (Parnell Square)

On the Bus Eireann website I know I get the number 8 bus but I cant find out how much a ticket costs! I have a student card so will be able to get a student ticket.

    Thanks for the help,
    DanDan

That is very cheap compared to the train.
come on, its not that much of a difference!
17.10 return for a student or 19.80 return for an adult (online fares)

Irish rail have deals of 10 euro each way so for an adult a saving of 10c per leg to go by bus AND then it takes 4 1/2 hours to get from Dublin to Cork! (aircoach is the other alternative and also takes a shade under 4 hours for 22 euro return)

Personally, I'd pay the 10c extra and get the train!

personally I go via Aircoach normally, as the Free Wifi, is a big bonus, but when they bring it onto the train I may be tempted to switch if the prices for the trains I want are 10 euro each way.

The poster is basing their pricing on the fact that at times when you book in advance online that you can find single fares as low as €10. These are mostly available on off peak journeys and may not be available when you want to travel

Is there any other way to get those kinds of rates ? Looking yesterday online for tickets going down in a couple of weeks time the return cost was €56 by train. The bus apparently takes 3hr 50 mins.

The train takes up to 3hours and can often take longer.

The heavily discounted EUR 10 fares are usually on trains that are less likely to have heavy loadings - they are set that low to try to incentivise people to use them!

Check different trains on the day you want to travel. But avoid the likes of the 1500, 1600, 1700, and 1800 ex-Dublin as they are busy trains and are normally priced at the full rate.

I really question Aircoach's timetable. The Dublin to Cork Aircoach route has more stops than the Bus Éireann route and yet Aircoach is 35 minutes quicker than BÉ:confused:? Does Aircoach have a comfort stop in Urlingford?

It should be noted that during busy periods Bus Éireann will run two or more coaches on the Dublin to Cork Route. One coach will run non-stop between Dublin and Cork ignoring the timetable and the other coach/es will adhere to the timetable for the benifit of mid-route passengers.

Unfortunately nobody knows when it's going to be busy so you could be unlucky enough to end up on a bus that takes 4hrs 25mins from Dublin to Cork. Friday and Sunday afternoons are a safe bet for an express coach though.

I used Bus Éireann from Cork to Dublin on a Sunday a few weeks ago and it only took 3hrs 15mins and that included a 15min break in Urlingford. If BÉ get an express licence for that route then the train is in serious trouble!!

I've took the Aircoach route about 4 times in the last 12-18 months and it's always been on time, we were late once by about 10 minutes as got held up at the Red Cow on the way to Dublin due to an incident, but other than that always on time. All of the coaches bar the one in the three all over advert have Wifi. 10 min stop at Pierce Kavanagh Garage/Shop in Urlingford.

Yes, the licensing systems in Ireland is crazy. It takes far too long to get a license and really more then one license should be allowed per route (to encourage competition).

The fact that we have a brilliant interurban road network and yet still no scheduled direct non stop services using the motorways is just nuts.

And yes, the intercity trains are already in serious trouble and even more so once direct bus services roll out with free wifi and preferably onboard toilets.

I think it is fair to say that the NTA are moving far more rapidly in this area than the department ever did - looking at the amount of changes happening to Bus Eireann services across the network in the past few months speaks volumes.

The CEO of the NTA did say at the Oireachtas committee that they inherited a large backlog of licence applications/service change requests and would try to get through them as fast as possible.
