I Phone with blacked out screen--help

The brother has an old i phone and he was tellin me he wanted to access his music, files, photos, pics etc and he cant get access to it. Basically it starts up but the screen just remains black and he cant navigate. I dont have an i phone so i cant really help him but maybe you can. Thanks, Brian.

if he just connects it to the pc he can get his photo,s of it that way what model iphone is it do you know

It is the original I phone I think. I'll find that out today and make sure. He has it about 2 years.
