Hi I stopped into the garage on sunday and filled up the car
2003 VW Polo 1.2L with 51.2 litres of petrol.
Its was fairly low the petrol light was on.

I taught it was alot to put in but its my girlfriends car and dont usually fill it up.
So I just looked in the manuel and it says it can only hold 45 litres

She says €50 usually fills it but l dont know how low it does be in those occasions.

Is it possible that the car could have a bigger tank ?

Im thinking more likely the garage is charging for petrol it isnt pumping out is this unheard of ?

I have the receipt in my hand 51.23 litres €77.25

    thanks

I drive that type polo, it's a 1.4, but still the same size tank. There is no way i could fill it to 50ltrs or beyond. A new irregularly sized fuel tank sounds ridiculous to me!

It could also be that the petrol station you went to has a different interpretation of what a litre really is!

could it be that the fuel tank holds 45 liters not counting the reserve which would be another 5-ish liters?

I had one for a while, 1.2 would average 400 miles to a tank in mixed driving but with careful driving i could get 430-450 miles on a long run

    i've often put 60L into a 2002 1.2 polo.
the trick is to, push the black lever/button by the tank inlet.
this releases the air (you'll hear it hiss out) and allow you to overfill the tank.

i would get 200 miles before the needle would budge off the full mark

My Ford Fiesta has a fuel capacity of 45 liters, but i'd say I only manage go get 35-40 lites in to the tank before you hear the click sound. factoring in the 80km (3.52 liters) of reserve fuel

I’ve discovered something else about the Polo this month, after managing to squeeze 55 litres of fuel into the GTI’s claimed 45-litre fuel tank. There’s effectively a 10-litre expansion area for the petrol, which is opened via a small button that’s pressed in when you close the filler cap. Certain nozzles can catch this while pumping fuel in, though, enabling a £70-plus fill.

It’s not recommended to use this extra capacity, but doing so got me from Wollaston to Heathrow and back (150 miles) without the fuel needle moving from full, the trip computer’s range function being bamboozled in the process.
