    rachiepopz,
it depends on which part of india you are entering in. its a huge country and whole country cannot be covered in few days.
about clothes - long shorts or skirts is normal there. too short pants or skirts usually rises eyebrows (i guess it raises few eyebrows here too). shirts and t-shirts are fine. just make sure you dont walk showing off your belly or chest :-)
people do stare at you on the streets whenever they see a foreigner on their streets wearing too little clothes. but they wont come n touch you :-)
few street sellers may come to you pushing hard to sell their stuff. keep walking ignoring them and they will go away.
you can wear sandals, flipflops, anything - just depends if your feet can take the heat or not.

there are several north indian tourist routes and south indian routes too. let us know your interests and we may be able to suggest few things..

anyway...i am sure you will love the country and its 30odd languages :-)

haa make sure you get used to curry before you leave ireland :-)

I'm in India right now. I've seen so many female tourists wearing the stuff they would normally wear on holidays and they get stared at so much. A friend of mine was groped a few times too. They also seem to get hassled more by taxi drivers and people selling stuff. I always enjoy myself much more here when I dress local. An American lady visited me here and straight away started wearing Indian clothes and one of the shop keepers presumed she lived in Delhi, and so she got ripped off less.
So really, clothes make a difference!
All tops should generally be below the elbow and pants/skirts well below the knee. You'll see local ladies maybe wearing shorter tops in the big cities, but they have the right colour skin to get away with it.

Other than that just pack money, bank cards, visa, mosquito repellent and good sun cream. Have fun!
