resume problem on laptop

    Hi.

Up to a couple of weeks ago when I closed the lid of my laptop it would go to sleep, and when I restarted it would reload where I left off. Now, however, it seems to fail to sleep and instead powers down and when I restart I get the message that windows recovered from an unexpected shutdown so it is clearly not shutting down properly either. This seems to have started around the time of a series of updates from Windows update in March but I cannot isolate one that is causing this.

The same issue happens when I try to make it sleep manually, the lights remain on for ages and then switch off completely. Previously the power light would flash slowly while in sleep mode.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue?

    make/model ?

    version of windows ?

    suspend or hibernate ?
if suspend then windows can only resume if battery hasn't gone flat

did you add more ram recently ?

if all else fails - system restore

    Laptop is an Msi GT725.
    Windows 7 home
Both hibernate and sleep causing the problem. It did hibernate OK last time but first for ages. Maybe windows updates yesterday helped?
    No hardware changes made.
Had thought of system restore but that is a last resort, really.
    Thanks.

Try turning off Hybrid Sleep, to check if that might be the cause of the problem, I know in my case it was. http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7/turn-off-hybrid-sleep-in-windows-7/

There are several other options for you to check there, that might help with the problem.

Run CHKDSK, power management issues can be caused by disk problems.

I had a similar issue, it was caused by the LT overheating when the lid closed.

Perhaps the windows update changed your power management settings.

Good one! Could well be an overheating issue.

unless it's something obvious, then system restore might be be a life saver - at least it might rule out stuff you may have forgotten or not noticed

remember if it's a screwed up registry setting a reinstall that inherits it won't solve such a problem and besides life it too short to try to figure out stuff that falls into the "windows half life , gradually decaying to unusable" model
