    (2) Section 19 of the Principal Act shall be construed and have effect as if the reference in subsection (1) (a) thereof to the cultivation contrary to section 17 of that Act of opium poppy included a reference to the cultivation contrary to the said section 17, as amended by subsection (1) of this section, of any plant of the genus Erythroxylon.

I don't think so. But there is a very small amount of opium in normal poppy seeds, enough to fail a drug test for opiates in some cases if you eat a roll or whatever with them on it.

Edit:- Just had a quick look and it seems the poppy seeds we eat do indeed come from the opium poppy! It's a funny old world!

In the US people have been jailed for growing them. Haven't heard of too many cases here.

Arrested for selling the seeds on Ebay

Arrested for growing them in their yard.

Because its mostly middleaged and old people who grow them. Not strung out junkies and drug dealers.
