I've been quoted 25 euro a square yard for 189mm engineered flooring. It's a smoked oak type. Has anyone seen a better price than this?

I haven't either here in the South or in NI.

    Price includes VAT.

Based on my pricing for engineered that's very good value assuming a good quality product. I'm sadly not quite at that stage yet but have been watching prices for engineered and it typically falls north of €35 per square yard.

I'm being sent samples so will let you know the quality. I'm going to get my carpenter to have a good look at them.

The supplier reckons he imports the stuff direct from China and sells it at low prices, quickly, so he's not holding a high amount in storage.

Is there anything people recommend that I look out for? Where was the best price you had seen sas? The best pricing I had seen was The Door Store in Belfast at £27 a square yard for oak but even that was only 150mm.

Can't remember where the cheapest was. Finishes are running a distant second to PH detailing at the moment.

Retail price is around 37 per square yard but a contact there has suggested this is open to negotiation esp. in the Kells and Cork stores (Dublin store apparently has less lee-way on discounts). Contact also said the engineered Ash floors from China are very bad quality but hasn't seen an oak one so can't comment on those.

Cheapest I've seen so far is €32.50 for a 189mm sized board with a 14mm backing in a smoked oak finish.

The same type of board in a lacquered oak finish is coming in at 29.50 or 27.50 in semi solid.

    The semi solid seems high.

Got some last year for 30 quid in Roscommon. Its great stuff, it didn't move a millimeter. Put in some solid stuff a few years ago and thats forever expanding/contracting.

Back in the Boom, it was 45 so 25 is a great price.

Turns out the stuff at 25e wasn't from a reputable supplier. He sent me 5 samples of wood. He said all 5 were engineered but it turned out one was engineered and 4 were semi solid.

Best price I've now seen is 32.50 for engineered smoked oak (size 180mm) and 29.50 for 189mm engineered lacquered white oak. Anyone seen better prices than this?

Not in those widths I'm afraid. We went for a narrower board as below, but at a substantially cheaper price (in Westmeath) than quoted here:

Ah Ted, I thought the post meant like the one in the link as that place is in Gorey and I can't see on their site if they have a specsavers outlet in Westmeath.

oops, sorry! Thought the link was to the premises where the flooring was bought :o

I'll save a lot of PMs here! My flooring (and doors, skirting, architrave, etc.) came from Billy Lynn in Rathconrath.

The price on the flooring has gone up since we bought it I'm told, my wife reckons it's in the shop at 29 Euro/m2 now, but you'd need to check that.

    Fergus.

Contact also said the engineered Ash floors from China are very bad quality but hasn't seen an oak one so can't comment on those.

Found the store in Kells very bad. I went in one evening at 5.20 on the way home from work. I walked in and walked around the entire lower floor and no sign of flooring except laminates. No-one approached me. I then asked the few staff standing at the central counter about engineered wood and they said it was upstairs.

Went up and started looking. There were no staff on the floor & nobody followed me after I asked. Next thing a fella came out and I thought he was a salesman. He started turning off lights for them to close at half 5 as I was looking at the flooring! Leaving me in darkness! I couldn't be arsed saying anything and left. Some sales technique that!

Decided I'd try them again after your post. Went into the shop last Saturday morning. The staff seemed to be renovating the downstairs area. Again, there were a few staff at the counter. I went upstairs and they clearly saw me going upstairs. Nobody came after me and there was no sales person upstairs. I looked at the flooring and saw prices were high. I also waited to see if anyone followed me up.

Eventually, I got pissed off and went down and asked if I could get the number of a rep to talk to from the shop (as none of the staff there seemed interested in sales). Lad behind the counter said they had no reps but he could help me.

I wnet upstairs with him and pointed out that I was interested in a smoked oak which they had at 37.99 square metre. I was straight up and said I could get a smiliar one for €32 in Enniskillen and what could he do. He said he'd see as I needed a large amount. Then went over to three strip semi solid white oak and said I wanted that but in a wide board and not three strip. He said they only did three strip but he could get it engineered. It was 44.99 a square yard however. I informed him I'd seen similar boards at about €30 and asked what could he do.

He then just turned round and said boards are made especially for them and they are aware of the quality and he couldn't match the prices I was getting. He didn't even seem interested in giving me a price so I left.

Whatever about the price, service in the place was beyond poor.
