Career Options After Accounting Degree

    Hi,

I'm currently in my third year of a four year Accounting degree. I'm on work placement at the moment in one of the Big 4 and I don't think it is for me in the long run. It seems that any way you go after Accounting involves more exams which I don't want at all.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what other way I could go that doesn't require me to do more exams and study? I need to have my decision made for September/October of this year since thats when the interviews for graduate jobs start.

    Thanks :)

If you want a decent career in accounting you need to do the exams of one or other body.

Low level accounts jobs will not need them and plenty of non accounting industry employers won't be so hung up on them either.

I done accounting & finance but I doubt not having finance in the degree title would exclude you from applying for a number of jobs in the financial sector as i imagine it made up a number of your modules.

You could start your search by sending applications to the PLCs and work down frm there.
Tough times to be looking for any kind of a position but good luck with the search and enjoy what time you have left in college

If you want to be an accoutant obviously you'll need to do more. You'll have very good exemptions though so you would be done in a year.

If you are looking at applying for graduate positions you will be expected to be aiming to do professional exams. Most of the people who will graduate from your class will probably be applying for the same jobs and I guarantee they will be doing professional exams so you're chances will be greaty diminished.

Personally I think you don't stand a chance in any of those graduate positions if you choose not to follow on from your degree. I can tell you that I prefer professional exams instead of having ti do a masters. I know engineering graduates who were on the Glanbia programme who took up CIMA. That's the level of competition out there now.
