VW Golf - Service to Compression test

    Hi Folks,

Brought my 06 VW Golf 1.4 Petrol Comfortline (59K km) to VW main dealer to get a service. Long story short.

Mechanic drove car in to be serviced, hears its not idling well, decides to do a compression test in which he breaks 3 coils or housings during the test. (Charges me for them + labour. Reckons they broke as they become brittle. Was removed with special VW tool.) Turns out test results are 15,9,10,14. Since cylinders 2 & 3 are too low there is an issue.

He tells me that the likely cause is a leak somewhere from carbon buildup from city driving and will need to be sent out to be machined.

Tells me, service was not done as if I was to proceed with said repairs the oil would need to drained again and a timing belt would be taken off. (due for service now too)

so left with a bill of €200+ & no service and...reckons from his experience repairs, service & timing belt will be €1800....

    Need some direction please...

a good indy will be able to get it sorted alot cheaper. ask family and friends for recommendations etc. what area are you in?

Second opinion needed straight away IMO.

Vags have their moments but a compression issue with only 59k on the clock? I don't think so.

How has the car been driving?

As for breaking the coils, something a vag mechanic should be able to remove with his eyes closed....and then charging you for them??? Big windows in that garage!

Car drives fine, no loss of power or burning smells.

    As for big windows......huge!

    I live in D15

@ nissan doctor ive seen 2 in recent mounths with burn out valves both with less than 59k. both i wanted the customer to look for goodwill as out of warranty both were refused. agree with nissandoctor in that a second opinion is required straight away.

also low enough compression will cause a misfire with in turn will put your engine light on....is this the case?

As regards breaking the coils etc you are def not responsible for that. The compression test is more than likely correct. The volkswagen 1.2 & 1.4 petrols are not reliable engines, and are known to give trouble with valve seats which will require machining. 60,000 miles would definately be enough to cause the trouble. A local mechanic would be the best option for this job.

Walsh motors in belfast will do timing belt +tensioners for 155stg. Bit of a journey but prob worth it if you are getting a few things done. A few ppl on vagdrivers recommended them.

I have seen these engines with valve issues, In my experience it is the valve guides that wear and will usually give the 'random multi cylinder misfire' fault. I must admit I haven't seem them go with as low as 60k kms on the engine, its certainly very common on these engines when they are getting up to and above the 100k miles mark.
