Faulty Coolant Sesnor for 07 VW Golf??

Got the car serviced about 6 or so weeks ago. Every couple of days when I start the car from cold (first thing at morning) the coolant level diagnostic flashes on the dash. If I turn the car off and restart it the fault does not appear.

I have checked the coolant level (obviously when the car is cold) and its fine - right between the max and min lines. Is it possible that its just faulty sensor? If so, is it located in the expansion chamber or in he radiator? Cost wise?

Best bet and easiest way to see if the sensor is faulty is to run a diagnostic on the car. That particular car is a CANBUS vehicle. Most of the cheaper leads wont work on it.

The more cumbersome option would be to check the sensor with a multimeter for resistance and see if its withing tolerances of the manufacturer. I would choose diagnostic thou.

I've had exactly the same issue on a MKV golf (although it's very intermittent). I topped it up a couple of times with a tiny bit of water, even though, like you, it didn't appear to need it. I mentioned it to dealers a couple of times at service time and they fobbed it off, told me there was no apparent fault :)

I also had this problem with my markV (petrol) golf a couple of months ago.

While checking the coolant tank for leaks I found that the electric cable/lead going into the tank at the top had come loose..I assume this is the lead for the water/coolant pump?? (a bit like the lead that goes into an electric kettle for example...might not be the best way to describe it!).

Anyway I simply pushed it back in until it was firmly in place again and the problem disappeared and has not occurred since. If the cable/lead is loose it may explain why the problem is intermittent...sometimes the connection is ok...sometimes it’s not. Might be worth checking!

I replaced the coolant chamber and the diagnostic message on the dash disappears. However the coolant level is dropping now, not considerably but went from max level to min level in 4 weeks (approx). I had a quick look through boards and founf this thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=51247308 I am experiencing the same symptoms as the lad who started this thread i.e. no signs of leaks etc. Again, its a 07 1.4l Baseline Golf. The water pump was changed recently - would it be a dodgy seal on the new water pump?
