Well the era has finally arrived.

    US Navy fires laser weapon

Hopefully they develop different coloured ones with different sound effects so we can tell the goodies from the baddies - just like Star Wars.

They used to try this with magnifying glasses and the sun back in the day. I believe it toasted boat hulls slightly. Lasers seem to fare better!

So, in the 90s cartoons we couldn't fire bullets since it was "too violent", so we used lasers that went "pew pew".

In the 2010s we had lasers that went "pew pew" in real life.

WTF are we gonna use now in cartoons? Cat firing rocket launchers?

don't tell me that wouldn't be a damn entertaining comic

its got both kinds of violence rolled into one entertaining weapon.

since the dawn of time man has yearned to use cats as projectile weapons and shoot at other men..a new era of entertainment is upon us.

    Metal Storm FTW...

    1 Million rounds per Min.

And they made it into a grenade launcher as well.

I don't understand the point, it ignited an outboard motor, they could have sent a guy out with an assault rifle to do more damage. I understand it would have a very low operational cost but surely this would be completely offset by the cost of researching, building and testing one that can't be defeated with a fire extinguisher, why not just stick with things that go boom?

because eventually and for certain uses it will be a much superior weapon than things that go boom presumably.

We need to make sure that they can't be used in real life though. Otherwise it's too violent. I'm gonna go buy me some cats.

They have been firing lasers for a long time.
The (still) ongoing problem with lasers is that the targeting systems have to literally be spot on.
This has proven to be a very sore point with the military establishment.

reminds me of a book, when I was a child, about these guys that would kill/incapacitate sea creatures with lasers. They also lived in an underwater glass city. That is all.

I have to admit, the Laser footage is deeply unsatisfying compared to that Rail Gun and those other brilliantly noisy weapons.

You do have to wonder why they still try to push lasers as a weapon. Everyone knows that lasers were invented by Hollywood in the 50's, but all their subsequent studies have shown that they are rendered almost useless by the rapid rise of deflector shields.

It normally takes a neutron torpedo to finish the job.

That compares nothing to a MOAB* weapon.

    * "Mother Of All Bombs" as its fully known. A terrifying, stunning weapon.
