Hand brake troubles

Went to tighten the handbrake on my 02 yaris the right wheel didn't seem to be holding at all and when I jacked it up it was spinning freely even with the handbrake on!

So I adjusted the star wheel so that it was just catching and it seemed to be perfect until the cable for the left wheel broke when I pulled up the handbrake. When I took out the centre console to have a look I could see that the equaliser plate was at quite an angle with the left hand side being way shorter.

Do you think this might be why the cable broke? If I replace it again is this likely to break again? Is the right hand cable a lot longer because its older or just stretched more? Am I going to have to do both of them, I'd rather not because Toyota are looking for €50 a cable! I don't know about bothering with second hand cables but are these something that a motor factors might have in a generic version of or is the toyota dealer my only hope?

    Thanks.

Its seems to be common fault on Yaris. I've replaced the cables on 3 of them.
They stretch, sometimes its only on one side. I've used cables from Toyota dealers.
But if you can get a generic version for less go for it. Good luck too.

The adjusters in the hub give trouble on these too, when turning the star gear you have to be sure to use another small screw driver to push back the lock plate for the star or you will find yourself with a handbrake that will loosen and take off down a hill some day! The fault is not the part just incorrect adjustment

Thanks lads, found this site that seems to match the toyota code : http://seekpart24.com/jakoparts/cable-park-brake-j3922071?at=8692&c=100635 will save me a few euro anyway.
