2002 Toyota Avensis, when driving along it seems ok, but take your foot off the gas and there is a whining noise. Not particularly loud, just about hear it over normal road noise. After some in situ experimenting while driving, the noise disappears if coasting in neutral or with the clutch pressed in.
I suspect a gear box problem but not so sure.

Does it happen with the radio off?

It's your gearbox main bearings,I see this about once a month at this stage, get it looked at before they break up and damage the gearbox casing...

I have one important journey to make tomorrow - not far only about 3 miles.
After that I can take it to be fixed - will it survive one more journey?

I'm sure it will manage three miles, but get it checked asap - Avensi are well known for their chocolate gearboxes!
