Hi guys, just a P21 for tax year it says underpayment €293. Just wondering how this relates to me if my employer was paying tax how come i have to pay it?
I lost my job last month aswell so at the minute i cant afford to pay it, so what are my options i.e if i cant pay and what happens if dont pay it?

are they looking for the money? it shuold say at the bottom of the P21, what they normally do is reduce your credits over the next few years so if you are due a refund this year after losing your job, your credits will be adjusted and the refund will go against the liability owing

You were asking how it happened, your employer may have had the wrong credits run in yoour payroll, make sure you have claimed all you can for the P21 you got

You do have options - If you can increase your tax credits , it would reduce your tax liability.

Check P21 again , there must be something in there that caused you to underpay.

Were you drawing any SW benefit during the tax year .

Check to ensure that you are claiming all tax credits due to you .

An underpayment of €293 = earnings of at least €1,465 .

Firstly, as allthedoyles suggested, make sure you are claiming all the tax credits you were entitled to. This may reduce or wipe out the underpayment.

Secondly, explain your current situation to them, they should be able to collect the underpayment by reducing your tax credits for this year.

I suggest you call to the public counter at your tax office, they should help you to get it sorted.
